Dunn's 9th-inning blast sends White Sox past Yanks
May 24, 2014 - 6:03 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Dunn crushed a two-run homer off David Robertson in the bottom of the ninth inning to send the Chicago White Sox past the New York Yankees, 6-5, in dramatic fashion. After giving up a leadoff single to Dayan Viciedo, Robertson (0-1) grooved a cutter into Dunn's wheelhouse and the slugger sent a no-doubter into the right-field seats as the closer walked off the mound in disgust.
"That's the best feeling in probably all of sports," Dunn said of his walk-off homer. "Especially after a night like tonight, long game. I know everyone is tired on both sides."
It was the eighth straight time the Yankees lost at U.S. Cellular Field.
Alexei Ramirez went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, while Adam Eaton had three hits and scored once for the White Sox, who have won four of their last five.
Daniel Webb (4-0) recorded the final out of the eighth before spinning a scoreless ninth to pick up the win.
The Yankees, meanwhile, are in a 1-4 slump despite Brian McCann staking them to an early lead with a three-run homer in the first inning.
Two errors helped Chicago cut into the deficit.
Dayan Viciedo appeared to ground out to end the home first, but Kelly Johnson missed Yangervis Solarte's low throw from third base, allowing a hustling Eaton to score without a throw.
Eaton forced another errant throw in the fourth when Brian Roberts fielded his slow roller and skipped one past Johnson to bring in Alejandro De Aza.
Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda walked Dunn with two away in the fifth, then served up Ramirez's go-ahead blast into the first row of seats in left.
Kuroda was pulled later in the inning having allowed four runs -- two earned -- on eight hits and two walks.
Scott Downs took over for Chicago starter Hector Noesi in the seventh and promptly gave up base hits to Roberts and Alfonso Soriano. A sacrifice bunt and walk loaded the bases, and Roberts scored the tying run on Jake Petricka's wild pitch. Jacoby Ellsbury followed with a go-ahead sac fly to center.
"We did a really good job in the seventh of getting the lead," Yankees manager Joe Girardi remarked.
