Phils' Buchanan makes debut versus Dodgers
May 24, 2014 - 1:21 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - With big shoes to fill, David Buchanan makes his major league debut Saturday afternoon when the Philadelphia Phillies host the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second test of a three-game series. The Phillies decided to use Buchanan as a replacement for Cliff Lee, who is on the 15-day disabled list with a left elbow strain. Buchanan, who will be recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, was a non-roster invitee to spring training this year. The right-hander has compiled a 5-1 mark with a 3.98 ERA for the IronPigs this season.
Dan Haren, who has lost his last two road starts, gets the starting assignment for the Dodgers. The righty gave up 10 hits and five runs -- four earned -- over six frames at Arizona on Sunday.
This will be Haren's second start against the Phillies this year. He didn't get a decision April 24 at Dodger Stadium after throwing six frames. Haren is 1-4 with a 4.67 ERA in nine career starts against the Phillies, including an 0-2 mark with a 6.75 ERA in three contests at Citizens Bank Park.
Last night, Clayton Kershaw rebounded from a rough outing to combine with four relievers on a three-hitter in LA's 2-0 victory. Kershaw (3-1) gave up two hits, walked three and struck out nine over six innings. The left-hander was hit hard in Saturday's 18-7 loss at Arizona, surrendering seven runs in 1 2/3 innings.
"It definitely felt good to put some zeroes back up there and remember how to get people out, which is good," Kershaw said.
Yasiel Puig finished 3-for-3 with two walks and an RBI for Los Angeles, which improved to 4-3 on its nine-game road trip.
Roberto Hernandez (2-2) allowed two runs on seven hits and four walks in 6 1/3 innings for the Phillies, who suffered their third straight loss. They are 1-7 in their last eight games versus the Dodgers at Citizens Bank Park.
Philadelphia won three of four meetings at Dodger Stadium from April 21-24 this season.
