Bauer takes ball for Tribe in Baltimore
May 25, 2014 - 1:56 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Cleveland Indians will try to earn a series win on Sunday afternoon behind their electric young arm, as they are set to take on the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.Trevor Bauer will get the call for the Indians in the finale of a four-game set. The 23-year-old is making his third start of the season and his second since being recalled in mid-May from Tripe-A Columbus, where he was 4-1 with a 2.15 ERA in seven starts.
Bauer's return to the big leagues on May 20 was a success, as he allowed two earned runs across six innings while striking out five in a victory over Detroit.
"He was aggressive attacking the strike zone," Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. "He changed speeds and used all his pitches. That's not the easiest assignment, coming up from Tripe-A to face (the Tigers). He really did a great job."
The Orioles will answer with Miguel Gonzalez, who's 2-3 with a 4.53 ERA.
Despite his modest numbers, Gonzalez has been a consistent asset to the Orioles' rotation, having gone seven straight starts allowing three earned runs or fewer after allowing seven in his first outing of the season.
Gonzalez earned his first victory since mid-April his last time out, yielding just two earned runs over six innings while striking out seven in a 9-2 triumph over Pittsburgh on May 20.
The Indians took control of the series on Saturday afternoon with a convincing 9-0 victory.
Corey Kluber (5-3) was outstanding, pitching seven shutout innings allowing five hits and two walks. He racked up nine strikeouts and is second in the majors with 83 on the season. Tampa Bay's David Price has 84.
"Aside from throwing a lot of strikes, the biggest thing is working inside and outside," Kluber said. "I think the key is just working ahead. Getting ahead early and staying ahead in the count and not really letting (the batter) get comfortable up there."
Carlos Santana hit his sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the seventh inning, and added three walks to his productive day. Ryan Raburn collected two RBI, and eight of nine Indians finished with at least one hit and one run scored.
Former Indian Ubaldo Jimenez (2-6) struggled in the setback, yielding four hits and five walks while being charged with five earned runs.
Nelson Cruz had the lone multi-hit game for the Orioles, going 2-for-4 with a a double.
The O's lost four of three meetings with Cleveland last season.
