Braun, Lucroy power Brewers past Marlins

May 25, 2014 - 9:11 PM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Braun went 4-for-5 and finished a homer shy of the cycle as the Milwaukee Brewers took the rubber game against the Miami Marlins, 7-0, on Sunday.

Braun had the single, double and triple through four innings, but couldn't complete the feat in his final two at-bats. He finished with two runs scored and an RBI.

Jonathan Lucroy had a pair of doubles and a triple with two RBI and a run scored for the Brewers, who wrapped up their 10-game road trip with a 4-6 mark.

Milwaukee starter Jimmy Nelson (1-0), who is regarded as the organization's top pitching prospect, tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing five hits and three walks with six strikeouts in his first major league win.

"He's got really good stuff," said Brewers manager Ron Roenicke of Nelson's outing. "The fastball is outstanding and the slider is a really good slider. He's not satisfied with walking people and getting behind."

Nelson was called up from Triple-A Nashville to make a spot start in place of Yovani Gallardo, who left his previous start with a sprained ankle.

Randy Wolf (0-1) had a rough outing in his first start for the Marlins. The southpaw allowed six runs -- four earned -- on nine hits, but did manage to work through five innings in the loss.

"It was a grind, it was a struggle," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said of Wolf. "Jose (Fernandez's) spot will be tough to fill. It was great that Wolf was able to get through the fifth. It ended up being big to get as many innings out of him as we could."

Fernandez, the reigning National League Rookie of the Year, underwent season- ending Tommy John surgery last week.

Marcell Ozuna collected two hits, including a solo homer in the ninth to break up the shutout.

Milwaukee jumped all over Wolf in the first with a three-run frame.

Braun doubled with one out and Lucroy scored him with a two-bagger in the next at-bat to open the scoring.

Carlos Gomez then singled home Lucroy and later scored on a base hit by Rickie Weeks.

Weeks didn't receive an RBI on the play because left fielder Christian Yelich was charged with an error when the ball went through his legs toward the wall in left, allowing Gomez to score.

Jean Segura reached on an error with one out in the second and Braun blasted a triple to right-center that made it 4-0.

Lucroy then fisted a double down the right-field line that plated Braun.

Martin Maldonado followed Khris Davis' double with an RBI single to center that pushed the margin to 6-0 in the third.

Nelson showed some mettle in the fifth by working through a bases loaded jam to keep the Marlins scoreless.

After back-to-back singles from Adeiny Hechavarria and Jeff Mathis, Jeff Baker went down swinging, then Yelich walked to load the bags up.

Derek Dietrich struck out looking, giving way to Giancarlo Stanton.

Nelson didn't have to deal with the major league RBI leader for long, inducing a harmless pop-up on a first pitch slider to end the inning.

Scooter Gennett added an RBI single in the eighth and Ozuna finally put Miami on the board with his ninth homer of the season off Francisco Rodriguez.

Game Notes

This was Wolf's first start since 2012. He entered the game allowing one run over five innings in relief this season ... The Marlins had won 14-of-17 at home before the setback ... Nelson had a 0.90 ERA in four appearances for the Brewers last season ... Milwaukee pounded out 14 hits ... Miami went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
