Yankees pay a rare visit to Busch Stadium

May 26, 2014 - 2:07 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of historic ballclubs begin a three-game series on Memorial Day at Busch Stadium, as the New York Yankees pay a visit to the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Yankees were in Chicago the previous six games and earned a split of a four-game series against the White Sox with Sunday's 7-1 victory. The Yankees, who split two games with the Cubs before visiting the White Sox, received a strong start from Masahiro Tanaka and four hits by Derek Jeter in Sunday's triumph.

Tanaka bounced back from his first loss of the season by holding the White Sox to a run over 6 2/3 innings with six K's and two walks. Tanaka scattered five hits and pushed his record to 7-1.

"Everyone contributed today, and it was nice to see a real good start from Tanaka," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

Brian Roberts homered and Brett Gardner drove in two runs for New York, which won for the third time in the past seven games and is two games off the lead in the AL East.

The Yankees, who have a 12-5 ledger in day games, are 3-3 on a nine-game road trip and their starters have a 6-3 record in the previous 19 games. Rookie starting pitcher Chase Whitley tries to improve that mark Monday and has posted two no-decisions thus far.

Whitley allowed one run in 4 1/3 innings of a 4-2 win last Wednesday against the Cubs and will make his third straight road start. Whitley, a right-hander, debuted May 15 against the New York Mets and delivered 4 2/3 scoreless innings.

St. Louis is back home for the next nine games versus the Yankees, San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals, and won two of three games at Cincinnati this past weekend.

Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright pitched his club to the series triumph in Sunday's 4-0 win with 12 strikeouts and one walk across eight shutout innings. He permitted five hits to become the NL's first eight-game winner (8-2).

"That's the epitome of pitching in my opinion," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said of Wainwright.

Kolten Wong, Allen Craig and Tony Cruz had two hits and an RBI apiece for the Cardinals, winners in nine of the last 11 games.

St. Louis is 14-7 at home this season.

Michael Wacha draws the start for St. Louis Monday and he is 3-3 with a 2.54 earned run average in 10 starts. Wacha did not factor in the outcome of last Wednesday's 3-2 win versus Arizona and pitched six shutout innings of two-hit ball with four strikeouts and three walks.

Wacha is 1-0 in his last three appearances and 3-0 in five home starts this season. The righty will face the Yankees for the first time.

St. Louis and New York are meeting for just their third all-time regular season series and first since the Cardinals won two of three games back in 2005 at Busch Stadium. The Yankees swept a three-game set in the Bronx back in 2003 and are 2-3 all-time in World Series play against the Cards.
