Final/10
Orioles rally to top Brewers in 10 innings
May 26, 2014 - 11:55 PM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Hundley's first hit with his new team was a game-winner.Hundley, who the Baltimore Orioles acquired from the San Diego Padres on Saturday, was 0-for-4 with an error in his club debut before stepping to the plate in the top of the 10th inning and plating J.J. Hardy with a single to left that lifted the O's to a 7-6 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Orioles were an out away from defeat, trailing 6-4 in the ninth inning facing Francisco Rodriguez, but Jonathan Schoop's second solo homer of the afternoon kept the game alive. Pinch-hitter Delmon Young then roped the first pitch he saw into left for a single. David Lough replaced Young at first and raced around to score on Nick Markakis' double to the gap in left-center, tying the score.
Milwaukee nearly stole it back in the bottom of the ninth. Jonathan Lucroy blooped a one-out single into left against Darren O'Day (2-0). Carlos Gomez then surprised the defense by laying down a bunt. Hundley fielded it and fired high to first, allowing both runners to advance to put two in scoring position for Mark Reynolds. Reynolds' liner to short was snagged by Hardy, who easily doubled off Elian Herrera, pinch-running for Lucroy, at third to force extras.
Hardy doubled with two outs off Rob Wooten (1-2) in the top of the 10th and scored one batter later on Hundley's single.
"I put the team at a disadvantage (with the error)," said Hundley. "To come through and get a hit to win the game was huge."
Zach Britton allowed two baserunners before inducing a double-play grounder off the bat of Irving Falu to nail down his third save.
Hardy and Schoop each had three hits in the triumph, while Adam Jones tripled and drove in a pair.
Khris Davis went 4-for-4 with a homer and two runs scored for Milwaukee. Lyle Overbay also went yard and scored twice and Jean Segura drove in two runs for the losers, who fell to 3-7 in their last 10 games.
Neither starting pitcher fared well in this one. Baltimore starter Chris Tillman was roughed up for six runs on seven hits and four walks over 5 2/3 frames, while his counterpart Kyle Lohse yielded four runs on nine hits in 6 2/3.
"This team will bounce back," said Lohse. "We'll forget about it tomorrow. We'll come back and do what we have to do."
Segura's leadoff triple in the bottom of the first inning set the tone for Milwaukee's offense. Ryan Braun followed with an RBI double for an early 1-0 edge.
Four consecutive hits in the top of the third gave the O's a brief lead. Markakis and Manny Machado singled to bring up Jones, who clubbed a three- bagger to the wall in right-center to score the pair. Nelson Cruz made it 3-1, plating Jones with a double up the middle.
The Brewers got a run back in the home half of the third on Reynolds' sacrifice fly and two more in the fourth on Segura's two-run double to go in front.
Davis and Overbay, the No. 7 and 8 hitters in Milwaukee's order, went back-to- back in the sixth to pad the cushion.
Schoop's solo homer in the seventh made it 6-4.
