Hudson aims to keep flow going vs. Cubs
May 27, 2014 - 2:48 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Red-hot veteran Tim Hudson tries to continue a stretch of success against a favorite opponent on Tuesday night, when the San Francisco Giants entertain the Chicago Cubs in game two of a three-game series at AT&T Park. The former Atlanta Braves standout has been lights-out in his first year with the Giants, especially in his last six starts -- during which he's won twice and maintained a 2.01 earned run average.
Hudson has started seven times in his career against the Cubs and is 3-1 overall. More recently, he's allowed just three runs in his last three starts against them while maintaining a 1.33 ERA.
The return to the West Coast has apparently benefited Hudson in terms of home performance as well. He's 3-0 with a 2.61 ERA in four starts at San Francisco.
Hudson began his career as a member of the cross-bay Oakland Athletics.
Facing Hudson and the Giants will be Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta, who met them for the first and only time in 2010.
In that game, as a member of the Baltimore Orioles, Arrieta allowed three hits and a run in seven-plus innings of a 4-1 win in San Francisco.
He was a 5-1 winner at San Diego on Thursday after giving up just one run on four hits across six innings against the Padres.
San Francisco's Pablo Sandoval homered off Arrieta in the 2010 game and is on a 12-game home hitting streak in which he's batting .378 with four home runs and 12 runs batted in.
On Monday, Jeff Samardzija struck out 10 batters and finally earned his first win of the season as the Cubs took down the Giants, 8-4.
Samardzija (1-4), who entered Monday's tilt with the best ERA (1.46) in the majors, was winless in 10 starts. His first win came despite matching a season-high four runs -- three earned -- on six hits in seven-plus innings of work.
Nate Schierholtz had two runs scored and a pair of hits, including his first home run of the season for the Cubs, who improved to 3-2 on a 10-game road trip. Anthony Rizzo also had two hits and two runs, while Darwin Barney drove in a pair.
Sandoval went 2-for-4 with a homer in defeat, driving in three of San Francisco's four runs. Brandon Crawford had the other RBI, but it came late in the game with a five-run deficit.
Yusmeiro Petit (3-2) surrendered four runs on six hits in five innings for the Giants. David Huff didn't fare much better out of the bullpen, allowing four runs on seven hits in 1 1/3 frames.
The Giants lost four of seven meetings with the Cubs a season ago.
