Diamondbacks seek to grab series win over Padres

May 27, 2014 - 2:49 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - A.J. Pollock's late-game heroics put the Arizona Diamondbacks in position for a series win over the San Diego Padres and the NL West foes will resume a three-game set Tuesday at Chase Field.

Pollack belted a game-winning two-run homer with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning in Monday's 7-5 victory over the Padres and finished 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Pollack has hit safely in 10 of his last 13 home games, going 21-for-48 with five homers and nine RBI.

"You come in here every day and put a lot of swings in the cages and you work hard and it's really cool when you actually get up there when the team needs you in late innings and be able to win a game," Pollock said.

Padres relief pitcher Kevin Quackenbush hit Cliff Pennington with a pitch with one out in the ninth, but then got Eric Chavez to hit into a fielder's choice for the second out. Pollock, though, drove a pitch over the center-field wall to win the game.

Paul Goldschmidt, Miguel Montero, Martin Prado and Pennington had an RBI apiece for the Diamondbacks, who have won three of four games and started a seven-game homestand on a good note. The D'backs are 5-3 in their last eight home games and have won five of the last seven series.

Arizona's Brad Ziegler threw the last two innings for the win, posting three K's and allowing two hits. Brandon McCarthy got the start and was touched for five runs and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings.

The D'backs, who will also host Cincinnati for four games, turn their attention to Wade Miley for Tuesday's start. Miley is just 1-4 in his last five decisions and has dropped back-to-back starts, including Thursday's 4-2 loss at St. Louis. He yielded three runs in 6 2/3 innings.

Miley has permitted at least three runs in five of his last six appearances and is 3-5 with a 4.85 earned run average in 11 starts. The left-hander faced the Padres on May 4 in a 4-3 loss, allowing three runs in seven innings for a no-decision, and is only 1-6 with a 5.09 ERA in 10 career starts against them.

San Diego opened a seven-day, six-game trip with Monday's loss and Quackenbush couldn't keep Pollack from leaving the yard.

"They got the last at-bat and put a good swing on a high fastball," Padres manager Bud Black said.

Tyson Ross started for the Padres and allowed five runs -- four earned -- and nine hits in five innings. Everth Cabrera hit a three-run home run and drive in four, while Yonder Alonso added a solo shot for the Padres, who have lost six of eight.

The Padres will pin pitching duties on Eric Stults Tuesday and he is 2-5 with a 4.97 earned run average in 10 starts. Stults has lost two straight starts and three of his previous four decisions, and is coming off Thursday's 5-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs in which he gave up five runs in 4 2/3 frames.

Stults, a left-hander, has an 0-4 record in five away assignments and is 5-4 with a 4.07 ERA in 11 career games (9 starts) against the D'backs. He went 2-2 with a 3.71 ERA in four starts in this series last season.

Arizona won two of three games at San Diego earlier this month at Petco Park. The Padres are 13-10 in this series since the start of last season.
