Marlins, Nats wrap up short set
May 28, 2014 - 3:02 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Miami's Henderson Alvarez mixes two of his least favorite things on Wednesday night -- a road game and the Washington Nationals -- when the Marlins wrap up a weather-curtailed two-game series at Nationals Park.Tuesday game was postponed due to inclement weather. A makeup date has yet to be announced.
Showers and thunderstorms moved into the Washington, D.C., area ahead of the scheduled 7:05 p.m. start time and more were forecast through the night.
Alvarez is winless on the road this season, toting a 0-2 record with a bloated 4.88 earned run average and a .350 opposition batting average, as opposed to the stellar 2-1 mark and 1.85 ERA he's compiled during starts in Miami.
He's winless in five career starts against the Nationals, too, including a 5-0 loss at Washington on April 8 in which he allowed three runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings.
His ERA across all meetings with Washington is 3.81, more than half a run higher than his composite 3.21 so far in 2014.
Washington's Adam LaRoche has hit him particularly hard, going 5-for-11.
The Nationals had scheduled Blake Treinen to start Tuesday's game, but will skip him and go with Jordan Zimmermann in the finale.
Zimmermann was a league-best 8-2 with an ERA below 2.00 and three complete games as he wrapped up May last season, but he's been far less consistent in 2014 and far more prone to big innings.
He's allowed at least two runs in an inning in nine of 10 starts this season, including twice in his most recent outing -- a 4-3 loss to Pittsburgh on Friday.
The Marlins dinged him for five runs in less than two innings of an April 9 matchup, but Zimmermann stifled them for just two runs in seven innings on April 14.
He's 5-3 in 13 career matchups with Miami while compiling a 3.84 ERA.
On Monday, Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run homer and scored twice and the Marlins beat the Nationals, 3-2.
Stanton had three of Miami's seven hits and right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (4-2) pitched 6 1/3 innings for the win, giving up two runs on just three hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
"(Stanton) crushed that (homer) and had some great at-bats, and that's what it's going to take for us to win games on the road," manager Mike Redmond said.
LaRoche hit a two-run homer for the Nationals, who have lost five of their last six.
Tanner Roark (3-3) took the loss in seven innings after allowing three runs on five hits.
Washington is 5-2 versus the Marlins this season after taking 14 of the 19 overall matchups a year ago.
