Wood eyes fourth straight win in opener with Brewers

May 30, 2014 - 2:35 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Travis Wood will try to win his fourth start in a row on Friday evening when the Chicago Cubs start up a three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Wood is set to face Milwaukee for the third time on the season and is 4-3 against the club lifetime with a 3.68 earned run average in 10 games (9 starts).

The left-hander lost at Milwaukee on April 26, tagged for five runs over 5 2/3 innings, but then beat the Brewers at home on May 18. He gave up two runs and struck out seven over seven innings in that one.

Wood followed up that victory with a 3-2 triumph over the San Diego Padres on Saturday, charged with two runs on three hits and a pair of walks over a season-high 7 1/3 innings. That moved the 27-year-old to 5-4 on the year with a 4.35 ERA.

"I thought Wood did a great job," said Cubs manager Rick Renteria. "He attacks the strike zone. He keeps it low, but he can elevate when he has to."

Brewers hurled Marco Estrada has squared off against Wood twice already this season and gets the call again tonight.

Estrada earned the win back on April 26 by scattering three runs over 7 2/3 innings. That made him a perfect 5-0 against the Cubs lifetime, but he finally lost to the club on May 18 after allowing four runs over five innings.

The right-hander, who has a 4.02 ERA in 13 career meetings (8 starts) with Chicago, has given up four homers to the Cubs this season, two of those off the bat of Welington Castillo.

The longball was an issue for Estrada in his last start on Friday. He gave up four solo homers over 6 2/3 innings of work, but still won a 9-5 decision. That was the 30-year-old's third victory in his last four decisions and he is 4-2 on the year with a 3.98 ERA.

The Brewers took the final two contests of a three-game set with Baltimore, winning Wednesday's finale 8-3.

Starter Yovani Gallardo picked up the win one game after coming in as a pinch- hitter in the 10th on Tuesday and ripping a go-ahead RBI double.

Khris Davis helped Gallardo win on the mound Wednesday, hitting a late three- run homer to help Chicago pull away.

"To add on late like that -- huge," said Brewers manager Ron Roenicke. "We keep waiting for one of those and we got it."

The Cubs have been unable to get anything on offense lately, dropping back-to- back shutout decisions to the San Francisco Giants. They managed just two hits in Wednesday's 5-0 defeat for their fifth loss in eight games.

The Brewers and Cubs have split six meetings this season, with each club taking two of three at home.
