Marlins' Turner tries to stay on winning track against Braves

May 31, 2014 - 2:01 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - After waiting over 10 months to taste victory, Jacob Turner will try to make it two winning starts in a row on Saturday afternoon as the Miami Marlins resume a three-game set with the Atlanta Braves.

Following a victory over the Braves on July 10 of last year, Turner went winless in 17 consecutive starts before beating the Milwaukee Brewers last Saturday.

The right-hander, who was coming off back-to-back losing starts, logged 6 1/3 scoreless frames in the 2-1 win, working around eight hits and a walk.

"He has great stuff," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said of Turner. "He can win here and it's up to him. Hopefully that was a good step in that direction."

Turner, 23, is 1-2 with a 5.35 earned run average this season and 1-2 lifetime versus the Braves with a 3.80 ERA in four meetings.

Like Turner, Atlanta starter Ervin Santana is looking to get on a roll today as he is mired in a three-game slump that has seen him go 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA.

Santana, who had posted a 1.99 ERA on the year before his recent rut, did not get a decision last time out on Monday versus the Boston Red Sox. The right- hander gave up six runs on five hits and three walks over five innings, striking out six.

Now 4-2 with a 4.06 ERA, the 31-year-old Santana is 0-2 lifetime versus the Marlins with a 5.95 ERA in four meetings.

The Braves were able to snap a four-game slide with last night's 3-2 victory, also moving a game ahead of the Marlins for first place in the NL East.

Julio Teheran tossed 7 1/3 innings to get the win and also had a pair of hits while scoring a run. He kept the Marlins off the board after giving up a two- run homer to Giancarlo Stanton in the first inning.

"I think Teheran just made really the mistake to Stanton," Redmond said.

Chris Johnson got the Braves on the board with an RBI single in the sixth before Teheran opened the seventh with a double and scored on Jason Heyward's triple to left, tying the game at 2-2.

"I was just trying to put the ball in play and that's what I did," Teheran said of his double. "I think that was the biggest play of this game."

B.J. Upton followed with a sinking liner to left that Christian Yelich made a diving grab on, but Heyward was able to tag up from third to give Atlanta a 3-2 lead.

Heyward and Teheran combined for four of the eight hits for the Braves, who also snapped a three-game slide to the Marlins. Craig Kimbrel recorded his 153rd career save to move within one of John Smoltz's franchise record for the Braves.

Miami had won five of seven coming in, but was limited to just five hits in the loss.
