Unbeaten Sale tries to salvage finale with Padres

Jun 1, 2014 - 1:41 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Sale tries to remain unbeaten and help the Chicago White Sox avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the San Diego Padres Sunday afternoon at U.S. Cellular Field.

Sale was supposed to pitch Monday at Dodger Stadium, but had his start pushed up a day because of a rain-shortened outing Tuesday against Cleveland. Sale pitched only three innings and was pulled from the game after a nearly two- hour rain delay.

In his two starts prior to Tuesday, Sale gave up only one hit each time and logged 10 strikeouts in both outings against the Yankees and Red Sox.

This will be Sale's first appearance against the Padres. His only interleague decision resulted in a win on June 25, 2013 against the Mets when he notched a career-best 13 strikeouts.

Fellow left-hander Eric Stults, who has just one win over his last seven starts, counters for the Padres. Stults' only victory during that stretch came May 10 versus Miami. He's gone 0-2 in three outings since that triumph and is 0-4 in six road starts this season.

Stults picked up the victory in his only appearance against the White Sox, pitching a four-hit shutout on June 25, 2008 as a member of the Dodgers.

This will be the first time Stults returns to U.S. Cellular Field since the White Sox released him two years ago. He pitched in two games for the White Sox in 2012 before being selected off waivers by the Padres May 17 that season.

Yesterday, Will Venable went 4-for-4 with two RBI in San Diego's 4-2 victory. Rene Rivera supplied two doubles and drove in a run while Alexi Amarista also had an RBI for the Padres, who have won three of their last four.

Tyson Ross (6-4) spun six solid frames for San Diego, allowing five hits and two runs -- one earned -- with five strikeouts.

"Maybe not as efficient as we've seen him, but overall, he was competing in a game against an opposition that was trying to get runs against him and he didn't give many up," said Padres manager Bud Black on Ross.

Dayan Viciedo had two hits and drove in a run as the White Sox dropped their second straight game. Andre Rienzo (4-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks across 3 1/3 innings.

"It's sputtering right now. We're just not getting that hit that gets you over the hump," commented White Sox manager Robin Ventura on his team's offense.

Padres outfielder Cameron Maybin (tightness in right calf) left the game in the second inning.

This is the first meeting between these two teams in Chicago since the White Sox won a three-game set in 2003.
