McCutchen, Alvarez lead Pirates to series win in LA

Jun 2, 2014 - 4:29 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew McCutchen and Pedro Alvarez carried Pittsburgh's offense and the Pirates picked up a rare series win in Los Angeles with a 5-3 victory over the Dodgers on Sunday.

McCutchen hit a solo homer, doubled twice and scored three times, while Alvarez went 2-for-3 with three RBI for the Pirates, who had lost nine in a row in Los Angeles before taking three of four in this series.

Edinson Volquez (3-4) limited the Dodgers to two runs on five hits over five innings, and Jason Grilli survived a shaky ninth to post his eighth save.

Justin Turner went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI for the Dodgers while Zack Greinke (8-2) surrendered a season-high four runs on five hits to take the loss, LA's fourth in its last five games.

Greinke had his streak of not giving up more than two earned runs end at 22 straight starts his last time out, then only lasted six innings Sunday.

Both of the walks he allowed came in the first inning following McCutchen's double off the left field wall, and Alvarez followed by slapping a base hit to left to bring in a pair.

McCutchen answered Turner's RBI single in the second with his fifth home run of the season in the third.

Turner found the left-field seats in the fourth, but that was the last hit the Dodgers had until the ninth.

Alvarez singled in McCutchen in the sixth, and Josh Harrison, one pitch after narrowly missing a home run down the left-field line, sent one over the wall in right an inning later to make it a 5-2 game.

Justin Wilson, Tony Watson and Mark Melancon each tossed a hitless inning behind Volquez before Grilli issued a pair of two-out walks in the ninth to make things interesting.

Scott Van Slyke blooped a pinch-hit single into left to bring in Turner and put runners on the corners, but Dee Gordon lined out to short to end LA's comeback bid.
