Athletics eye series win over Yankees
Jun 4, 2014 - 2:48 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Oakland Athletics look to keep rolling when they shoot for a series win over the New Yankees Wednesday in the Bronx. The Athletics disposed of the Yankees with Tuesday's 5-2 win in 10 innings, as Brandon Moss' second home run of the game highlighted a three-run top of the 10th inning and pushed Oakland's AL-best record to 36-22.
"It feels good. Any home run feels good but in an extra-inning game it feels really good," said Moss, who had missed the last two games while battling tightness in his right calf.
Jed Lowrie had an RBI double and Kyle Blanks delivered a run-scoring single in the 10th inning, while Sean Doolittle took care of business in the 10th for his sixth save. Scott Kazmir started for the A's and struck out 10 across 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs and six hits.
Dan Otero picked up the win with a scoreless eighth inning for the A's, winners in four straight and six of eight games. The Athletics will also visit Baltimore and Anaheim on this nine-game trip.
Oakland hurler Jesse Chavez will try to avoid a third straight loss when he toes the rubber in the Bronx tonight. Chavez started the skid at Toronto on May 24, when he allowed four runs -- two earned -- in 5 1/3 frames of a 5-2 setback. He then gave up three runs in six innings of a 5-4 loss to Detroit last Thursday.
Chavez is 2-3 in his past five decisions and 4-3 with a 2.78 earned run average in 11 total starts. In two relief appearances against the Yankees, the right-handed Chavez is 1-0 across 7 2/3 shutout innings. Chavez has a 2-1 mark in six road starts this season.
The Yankees have scored two runs in each of the last three games -- all losses -- and fell to 2-5 in the past seven tries.
In Tuesday's extra-inning loss, Mark Teixeira returned from a wrist injury to finish 2-for-5 with a home run and an RBI single. It wasn't enough to lift the Yankees, as reliever Adam Warren struggled to keep Oakland off the board in the deciding 10th inning.
Hiroki Kuroda pitched well in the start for New York, allowing only a run across 6 2/3 innings.
New York has been outscored by a 22-6 margin the last three games.
"We've just been struggling the past week or so," said Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner. "We need to get out of it."
The Yankees will send Vidal Nuno to the bump Wednesday and he is 0-2 in his last four appearances. Nuno lost to Minnesota on Friday, as he allowed four runs in 6 2/3 innings of a 6-1 loss.
Nuno, who has fanned at least five batters in each of his past three outings and lasted at least six innings in four of his last five, is 1-2 with a 5.48 ERA in 11 games (8 starts) this season. The lefty will take on the A's for the first time in his young career.
New York lost five of six meetings with the Athletics last season and is just 3-11 in the previous 14 matchups between the clubs. The Yankees are 5-7 in their last 12 home games versus Oakland.
