Castro knocks in three as Cubs beat Mets

Jun 5, 2014 - 5:33 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Starlin Castro went 3-for-4 with three RBI and the Chicago Cubs defeated the New York Mets, 5-4, in the second matchup of a three-game set from Wrigley Field.

The Cubs trailed by two entering the home half of the fifth, but with one out, Emilio Bonifacio singled, Justin Ruggiano walked and Anthony Rizzo singled to load the bases.

Castro then stroked a single up the middle to tie the game at 4-4 before Rizzo scored later in the inning on a wild pitch from Jeurys Familia to account for the final margin.

Chicago starter Edwin Jackson (4-5) allowed four runs -- one earned -- on five hits with five walks and four strikeouts to earn the win.

"You just try to keep the team close and hopefully the team can get some runs late like we did tonight," said Jackson.

The Cubs' bullpen held the Mets to just two hits over the final four innings, with Hector Rondon closing it out for his seventh save of the season.

Dana Eveland (0-1) absorbed the loss in relief of starter Daisuke Matsuzaka, who surrendered four runs on four hits and five walks over 4 1/3 innings.

With one out in the first, Daniel Murphy singled and David Wright walked before Curtis Granderson grounded into a force out to leave runners on the corners.

It looked as if Jackson escaped the minor jam, but Castro booted a grounder off the bat of Bobby Abreu that allowed Murphy to score.

Lucas Duda then drilled an opposite-field double to left that plated Granderson and Abreu for a 3-0 lead.

Castro made up for the miscue in the home half with an RBI single.

Ruggiano doubled and Rizzo walked before Castro plated Ruggiano with his single to right. Rizzo advanced to third on the play and scored when Nate Schierholtz grounded out to first.

Ruben Tejada stroked a one-out homer in the fourth to get a run back for New York.

"We got off to a good start, but couldn't put the game away," said Mets manager Terry Collins. "We're just not hitting with guys on base which has been the tune to the start of the season. We have to find some energy somehow."

Murphy doubled with two outs in the sixth to put two runners in scoring position and Wright was intentionally walked to load the bases. Wesley Wright relieved Carlos Villanueva and struck out Granderson to end the threat.

The Mets finished 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 on base.

Rendon struck out Murphy and David Wright to begin the ninth, then Granderson singled to center before Abreu grounded out to second to end it.
