Giants turn to Hudson in game two vs. Mets

Jun 7, 2014 - 2:44 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Tim Hudson goes after a third straight win on Saturday when the San Francisco Giants continue a three-game series with the New York Mets at AT&T Park.

After tossing seven scoreless innings in a win over Chicago on May 27, Hudson fired seven more scoreless innings to beat the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, as he improved to 6-2 on the year, while lowering his ERA to 1.75.

The Giants scored four early runs for Hudson, who was in control on the mound.

"We got a little lucky," Hudson said. "They helped us out defensively. We probably should have gotten only one run. It's nice to take advantage of a miscue."

Hudson has faced the Mets 30 times and is 17-10 against them with a 3.47 ERA.

New York, meanwhile, will counter with a right-handed veteran of its own in Bartolo Colon, who has won his last three starts. Colon beat the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday, limiting them to a pair of runs in seven innings, as he improved to 5-5 to go along with a 4.52 ERA.

Colon has faced the Giants three times and is 2-1 against them with a 5.12 ERA.

San Francisco continued to impress in Friday's opener, as Buster Posey's two- run homer in the eighth inning propelled the Giants to a 4-2 win. Posey went 3-for-4 on the night and Brandon Crawford knocked in the other two runs for the Giants, who have won eight of their last 10 and became the first team in the major leagues to reach 40 wins.

Angel Pagan walked to begin the eighth and Posey crushed the second pitch he saw from Carlos Torres (2-3) into the seats in left-center that gave the Giants the lead.

"Walks are killing us," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "It's certainly something you learn when you come up in this game, walks will burn you."

Jeremy Affeldt (1-1) earned the win in relief of Matt Cain, who carried a no- hitter through five innings.

Cain made his return to the mound after a stint on the disabled list with a strained right hamstring and allowed two runs on three hits with three strikeouts in the no-decision.

"You're excited to get back out there," said Cain. "You're thinking about just finding a good rhythm. For me I kind of recognize (the no-hitter), so I recognized that really early."

Sergio Romo toed the slab in the ninth and picked up his 19th save of the season after a perfect frame.

Mets starter Jon Niese went toe-to-toe with Cain for most of the night, surrendering two runs on five hits with three punchouts before leaving it in the hands of his bullpen.

New York has dropped its last four games.

"I don't look at what the other guy does, I just go out there to give up the least amount of runs as possible," Niese said. "I made that mistake in the seventh and it should have been a different ballgame."

The Mets had won five straight against the Giants at AT&T Park before Friday's loss.
