White Sox try to avoid Angels' brooms
Jun 8, 2014 - 2:05 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Chicago White Sox will try to avoid being swept in a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Sunday at Angel Stadium.Jose Quintana took the fall for the White Sox Monday against the Dodgers, and will try to rebound against C.J. Wilson and the Angels this time around.
Quintana was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs, though none were earned, in the 5-2 defeat at the hands of Los Angeles. He was working through five shutout innings before the White Sox' defense took a sixth inning vacation. The 25-year-old lasted six complete innings and struck out five batters, but was handed his second loss in his last three starts.
The left-hander enters the matchup with a 3-5 record on the season and a 3.31 earned run average in 12 starts. In three career outings versus the Angels - all starts - Quintana is 0-2 with a 3.57 ERA, 12 strikeouts and nine walks through 17 2/3 combined innings.
Wilson will head to the hill seeking to correct a two-game skid. Wilson, who is 6-5 on the year with a 3.52 ERA, has lost back-to-back games for the first time all season.
Wilson was chased after just 2 2/3 innings in his last start against the Astros. He surrendered six hits, five earned runs and gave up five walks in the 7-2 Houston victory.
"I didn't pitch very well, which is unfortunate, because our team needed that game tonight," Wilson said. "You're going to have a game like this every two years or something like that."
At home this season is where Wilson has felt the most comfortable. In six starts in Anaheim, Wilson is 4-1 with a 2.66 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP and a .211 batting average against.
Saturday's clash looked to be completely in favor of the White Sox until a rocky eighth inning for starter Chris Sale turned the game around entirely and the Angels pulled out a 6-5 win.
With the score 5-1 and Chicago in the lead, the Angels loaded the bases and sent Mike Trout up to the plate. Trout smacked a grand slam off Sale, who was pulled from the game after giving up the lead.
Cory Rasmus picked up the win for the Angels, while Jake Petricka took the official loss for Chicago. Josh Hamilton collected three hits, and Erick Aybar had two with the game-winning RBI in the eighth for LA.
"We needed a victory like this," Trout said afterward. "We never stopped fighting, we had great at-bats, put some things together and we came out and got the W."
The White Sox will try to avoid being swept by the Angels on the road before they return to Chicago for a nine-game homestand. Los Angeles has won nine of its last 12 against the White Sox.
