Ortiz's 3-run homer in 9th snaps Boston's skid
Jun 9, 2014 - 3:58 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - David Ortiz's three-run homer in the top of the ninth helped the Boston Red Sox snap a five-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday in the finale of a three-game set.Brock Holt singled off Joba Chamberlain (1-3) to begin the ninth and Dustin Pedroia walked two batters later to put two runners on for Ortiz, who cranked a 1-1 slider over the wall in right.
Boston starter John Lackey (7-4) picked up the win, hurling eight innings and giving up three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits with five strikeouts, and Koji Uehara notched his 12th save of the season.
Holt went 4-for-5 and Mike Napoli added three hits, including a homer, in his first game back since May 25 due to a strained finger.
Eugenio Suarez, who hit his first career homer on Saturday, knocked in two runs in the setback.
Singles from Jackie Bradley Jr. and Holt and a walk to Xander Bogaerts loaded this bases with one out in the third. Pedroia then poked a sacrifice fly out to center that plated Bradley and made it 1-0 Boston.
Austin Jackson singled to lead off the home half of the third, stole second and scored on Suarez's one-out single to left.
Victor Martinez then gave Detroit the lead with an RBI single in the fourth that scored Miguel Cabrera.
Napoli tied the game up at 2-2 with his solo shot in the sixth, his first homer since April 22.
Cabrera singled in the home half and was immediately replaced by Don Kelly because of tightness in his left hamstring. Cabrera is considered day-to-day.
Holt tripled with one out in the seventh, but Bogaerts grounded out sharply to third and David Ortiz flied out to center two batters later to end the inning.
Napoli singled to lead off the eighth and stole second but was stranded on third as Bradley struck out with men on the corners to end the frame.
It looked as if the rookie Suarez gave the Tigers the lead for good with his RBI single in the seventh, but Detroit's suspect bullpen couldn't hold it.
Game Notes
Uehara has made 15 straight scoreless appearances ... The win was Boston's first over Detroit this season. It had lost the previous five games to the Tigers ... Boston went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position, while Detroit went 3-for-8 in those instances.
