Price tries to get Rays on track vs. Mariners

Jun 9, 2014 - 12:54 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Felix Hernandez gave a Cy Young performance on Sunday for the Seattle Mariners. Tampa's David Price will try to do the same for the Rays on Monday when they conclude a four-game series with the Mariners at Tropicana Field.

Price has not looked like the pitcher who was the American League's Cy Young Award winner in 2012, as he is winless in his last four starts (0-2) and is just 4-5 on the year with a 4.03 ERA.

The left-hander absorbed the loss on Wednesday against Miami despite striking out 11 batters in 7 1/3 frames. He was hit, though, for five runs, although, just one was earned in the 5-4 setback.

Price has faced the Mariners twice and is 1-0 with a 2.81 ERA against them.

Seattle, meanwhile, will turn to righty Erasmo Ramirez, who is 1-4 with a 6.82 ERA. Ramirez was awful on Tuesday in Atlanta, as the Braves ripped him for five runs and eight hits in just three innings. His offense bailed him out, though, and he did not get a decision in his team's 7-5 win.

"I was just missing my spots too much," said Ramirez, who is 0-4 in his last six starts. "The things I wasn't doing in Triple-A, I did here and I paid for it. They took advantage of every mistake I made."

Ramirez is 1-0 in three games (2 starts) versus the Rays.

Hernandez turned in one of the best performances of his career on Sunday, striking out a career-high 15 batters over seven scoreless innings. However, he had nothing to show for it, as the Mariners didn't score until plating five runs in the ninth in a 5-0 triumph..

"He was sharp from his bullpen on," Mariners catcher Mike Zunino said of his battery mate. "We did a great job of mixing up pitches."

Kyle Seager had a two-run double in the pivotal ninth for the Mariners, who have won seven of their last eight.

Tampa Bay has now lost 12 of its last 13 games and is a season-worst 16 games under .500.

"It didn't matter what team (Hernandez) was facing today, he was going to have a dominant performance," Tampa starter Chris Archer said of his counterpart.

Tampa took two of three from the Mariners earlier in the season.
