White Sox hold on to slip past Tigers
Jun 10, 2014 - 5:28 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Ronald Belisario stranded the tying run on third base in the ninth inning as the Chicago White Sox edged the Detroit Tigers, 6-5, in the opener of a four-game set between the AL Central rivals.Chicago's corner outfielders misplayed two balls into doubles in the last inning, as Moises Sierra lost Austin Jackson's fly ball in the lights and Alejandro De Aza overran Alex Avila's deep line drive to the wall in left.
Avila's double pulled Detroit within 6-5, but Belisario retired the next three hitters in succession to post his sixth save of the year.
Jose Abreu belted a two-run homer, Conor Gillaspie knocked in a pair and Gordon Beckham went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI for the Sox, who dropped three straight to the Angels in Anaheim over the weekend.
"It was a team win tonight," Gillaspie said. "We had so many guys contribute in so many different ways."
Victor Martinez smacked a two-run homer for Detroit while Eugenio Suarez and Miguel Cabrera, who exited Sunday's game with left hamstring tightness, both hit solo blasts in the setback.
Hector Noesi (2-4) served up those three home runs but still came away with the win, his second straight after going two years without a victory. The right-hander was charged with four runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings.
Rick Porcello (8-4) surrendered six runs -- five earned -- on nine hits over five-plus innings for the Tigers, who have dropped seven of their last nine.
"It was a struggle from the get-go," Porcello said.
Noesi set down 10 of the first 11 batters he faced and was staked to an early lead when Beckham singled in Adam Eaton in the first and Gillaspie knocked in Tyler Flowers with a base hit two innings later.
Solo home runs by Cabrera and Suarez in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, erased Detroit's 2-0 deficit, but the Sox answered with three runs in their half of the fifth to take the lead for good.
Beckham hit a ground-rule double to left and scored standing up on Gillaspie's base hit to right field, and Abreu cranked his 18th home run of the year to make it a 5-2 game.
Martinez pulled Detroit back with one with a two-run blast into the right- field seats in the sixth, though Chicago got a pivotal run back in its next turn as Eaton singled in De Aza.
Game Notes
Noesi was 0-14 over a span of 40 appearances -- 19 starts -- before beating the Dodgers in his previous outing ... Porcello was 9-1 with a 2.36 ERA in his previous 13 outings against Chicago. Detroit went 12-1 in those contests ... Martinez has 15 home runs this season, eclipsing the 14 he had in 159 games last year ... Chicago had lost four straight home games to Detroit.
