Tillman, Orioles resume set with Red Sox

Jun 10, 2014 - 2:47 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Baltimore righty Chris Tillman tries to continue his recent mastery of the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday when the American League East rivals continue a three-game series at Camden Yards.

Tillman is 5-1 with a 2.44 ERA in his last nine starts against the Red Sox. He's also 3-0 at home against them over that stretch with Baltimore winning eight of those nine contests.

However, the right-hander, who is 5-2 overall on the year with a 5.20 ERA, is coming off an atrocious outing against the Texas Rangers on Thursday that saw him get roughed up to the tune of five runs and six hits in just one-plus inning of work. He did not get a decision, though, in his team's 8-6 loss.

Boston, meanwhile, will turn to righty Brandon Workman, who has yet to record a decision this season, but has pitched to a 3.74 ERA in six games, the last three of which have been starts.

Workman gave up three runs and four hits to Cleveland on Wednesday but did not factor in the decision of his team's 7-4 loss.

This will be his first-ever start versus the Orioles.

Baltimore drew first blood in this series on Monday, as Bud Norris tossed eight scoreless innings and the Orioles smacked three home runs in a 4-0 win.

Adam Jones, Nick Markakis and Ryan Flaherty all went deep in the win, while the Red Sox mustered just three hits against Norris (5-5) in falling to 1-6 on their current nine-game road trip.

"Orel Hershiser used to talk about one pitch to compete, two to win and three to dominate," said Orioles manager Buck Showalter. "I wouldn't say (Norris) was dominant, but that third pitch (the changeup) kind of put his game at a different level. Really commanded the fastball, too. Got some early outs, didn't really get in a lot of deep counts. I thought that was fun to watch."

Jones finished 3-for-4, Flaherty went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Markakis had two hits and two RBI to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.

All three homers came off Jake Peavy (1-4), who was otherwise solid in a seven-inning stint in which he struck out seven with one walk.

"Yeah, I'd take a few pitches back and it's a different game," Peavy said.

Baltimore and Boston have split eight meetings this season.
