Brewers hope to draw even in series with Mets

Jun 11, 2014 - 2:42 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The National League Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers try to even their three-game series with the New York Mets when the two clubs resume action Wednesday from Citi Field.

The Brewers dropped Tuesday's series opener, 6-2, and starting pitcher Marco Estrada was hammered for all six runs and four hits, including two homers, in six innings of work. He struck out five and walked four batters.

Estrada has walked 11 batters in his last three starts.

"I have no idea (what happened)," Estrada said. "I threw a lot of close pitches, guys just laid off of them. They had good at-bats off of me. A few got away from me. I don't know. I don't understand why I'm walking so many guys right now. I have to figure this out now because it's getting out of hand."

Carlos Gomez and Lyle Overbay had an RBI apiece for Milwaukee, which had won two in a row and three of four games, and sits four games ahead of St. Louis for the Central lead. The Brewers are 3-3 on an eight-game road trip and 13-6-2 in series play. They began a stretch of 20 games in 20 days Tuesday.

Wily Peralta will start for Milwaukee Wednesday and he is 5-5 with a 3.03 earned run average. Peralta had lost three straight starts and was winless (0-4) in his past five until defeating Minnesota on the road last Thursday. He gave up four runs in five innings of an 8-5 decision and found the win column for the first time since May 2 at Cincinnati.

Peralta has a 2-2 mark and a 2.79 ERA in five road starts this season and won his only start against the Mets back on Sept. 16, 2012 in a 3-0 victory. He delivered eight scoreless innings in that one with five K's and one walk.

The Mets put the brakes on a season-high, six-game losing streak with last night's win and were aided by Taylor Teagarden's grand slam in the sixth inning. Daniel Murphy belted a two-run homer in the third inning for New York, which opened a six-game homestand on a high note.

Teagarden made his Mets debut on Tuesday night after being called up from Triple-A Las Vegas Sunday to replace demoted catcher Travis d'Arnaud.

"If I can help get the monkey off the back," Teagarden said. "Whatever it takes."

The run support made a winner out of Daisuke Matsuzaka, who gave up just one run in six innings to improve to 3-0 on the season. The Mets are 4-7 in their last 11 games.

New York will also welcome San Diego to Citi Field for three games and hopes Jacob deGrom can keep the winning ways going when he gets the ball Wednesday. DeGrom is 0-2 with a 3.19 earned run average in five starts and has posted three straight no-decisions. He allowed four runs in five innings of a 7-4 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field last Thursday.

The right-handed deGrom has never faced Milwaukee and is 0-2 in three starts at home.

Milwaukee won four of seven games against the Mets last season and went 3-1 at Citi Field.
