Rangers turn to Darvish in clash with Marlins

Jun 11, 2014 - 2:43 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Texas Rangers turn to staff ace Yu Darvish in Wednesday's finale of a two-game series with the Miami Marlins.

Darvish has won three straight and five of his last six starts, and is coming off Friday's 6-4 win over Cleveland in which he allowed four runs in seven innings. Darvish threw eight shutout innings and struck out 12 in his previous start and has a 6-2 record in 11 starts to go along with a 2.36 ERA.

The right-hander is 2-2 in six starts at home and has never faced the Marlins.

Texas blew a 5-4 lead in Tuesday's 8-5 setback and lost for the fourth straight time. Jason Frasor suffered the loss in relief and the Marlins scored two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to pull away. Rangers starter Colby Lewis gave up three runs in five innings in the no-decision.

Robinson Chirinos had two RBI, Rougned Odor went 2-for-4 and knocked in a run and Brad Snyder walked with the bases loaded to provide a run for the Rangers, who have lost eight of 11 games and are 2-6 on a nine-game homestand. Alex Rios scored twice and Adrian Beltre added two hits in the loss.

"In the end, we didn't play the defense we were capable of playing. That hurt us," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "We shot ourselves in the foot."

Beltre is closing in on 2,500 hits in his career (2,489) and has seven multi- hit games on this current homestand.

Following Wednesday's game versus Miami, the Rangers will head west to visit Seattle, Oakland and the LA Angels for nine games.

Meanwhile, the Marlins rallied for their second straight win and sixth in eight tries last night and have won their last 13 interleague games. Christian Yelich had a big game with four hits and four RBI, while Casey McGehee and Justin Bour ended with three hits apiece.

"We have to try and keep it rolling tomorrow. I don't know what that is or why we've beaten so many American League teams. I guess we like playing against them," Yelich said.

Bryan Morris picked up the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief and Steve Cishek collected his 15th save with two K's in the ninth. Tom Koehler started for Miami and was reached for five runs in 5 1/3 innings.

The Marlins, who are 4-2 on this seven-game trip, remained a half-game behind Atlanta and Washington for the NL East lead and will return home to start a 10-game stay versus Pittsburgh, Chicago (Cubs) and New York (Mets).

In other team news for the Marlins, veteran shortstop Rafael Furcal could make his debut this weekend. Furcal (hamstring/groin) has been participating in minor league rehab assignments and he could be reinstated as early as Friday.

"I don't know when that day is coming, but it is probably coming soon," Marlins manager Mike Redmond told the club's website. "It was coming soon about a month ago, too, and it didn't. I think it's safe to say coming soon."

Jacob Turner takes the mound for Redmond's club Wednesday and he is 2-3 with a 5.93 earned run average. Turner has won two of three starts and was bailed out by the offense in last Thursday's 11-6 victory at Tampa Bay, where he allowed five runs in 5 1/3 innings. He has given up nine runs in his last two starts.

Turner has never faced the Rangers and is 1-2 in four road starts.

Texas and Miami last met in 2011, when the Marlins won two of three games on the road. The Rangers swept a three-game series in south Florida in 2010.
