Keuchel tries to stay hot versus D'backs
Jun 11, 2014 - 2:56 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - A man who's already achieved his career-best win total for a season -- Houston pitcher Dallas Keuchel -- will try to add to that burgeoning number on Wednesday night when the Astros host the Arizona Dimaondbacks in game three of a four-game home-and-home series with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The first two games were played at Arizona's Chase Field, while games three and four will go off at Houston's Minute Maid Park.
Keuchel began a stretch of five wins in six starts with a victory at Detroit on May 8, which coincided with the Astros' run that's seen them go 19-13 after beginning the season at 10-24.
His earned run average is 1.34 in the six games and it was pared down even further after he tossed six scoreless innings to beat Minnesota, 5-4, on Friday. That win moved him to 7-3 on the season, eclipsing his previous best for single-season wins and pushing his 2014 ERA to 2.50.
He faces another red-hot team in the Diamondbacks, who's gone 21-16 in 37 games after winning just eight of their first 30.
"We've been pushing on, guys staying with their approach," manager Kirk Gibson said. "A lot of talking on the bench and we've made some adjustments in-game when we've had to."
They will start veteran Brandon McCarthy, who's struggled to just one win in nine decisions this season and has won just six of 25 since arriving in Arizona prior to 2013.
He allowed three runs in 6 1/3 innings, and struck out nine batters, while dropping a 5-2 verdict to Atlanta in his most recent start on Friday.
"He gave us a chance to win," Gibson said.
He's faced Houston twice in his career and has won both starts while compiling a sterling 0.60 ERA. Contraily, Keuchel is 0-2 against Arizona with a 7.20 ERA.
On Tuesday, Aaron Hill drove in two timely runs to lead the Diamondbacks to a 4-1 victory at Chase Field.
Paul Goldschmidt went 2-for-3 with a homer and two runs scored and Martin Prado tripled for the Diamondbacks. Bronson Arroyo (6-4) tossed seven solid innings of one-run ball, allowing six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Jon Singleton supplied three hits and a run scored for Houston. Astros starter Brad Peacock surrendered just one run on three hits across six frames, but Josh Fields (1-4) was tagged with the loss after giving up two runs -- one earned -- in the seventh.
