Carter powers Astros past Diamondbacks
Jun 12, 2014 - 7:22 AM Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Carter homered twice and Dallas Keuchel tossed eight solid innings to lead the Houston Astros to a 5-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday.George Springer went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Alex Presley supplied two hits and a run for the Astros, who have won three of their last four.
Keuchel (8-3) earned the win after allowing just one run on four hits with five strikeouts.
Aaron Hill homered and Brandon McCarthy (1-9) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits in six-plus innings.
"I wasn't sharp, really, from the get-go," McCarthy said. "I thought I did a good job of trying to get as deep as I could."
Houston started the scoring in the first. Springer singled and Jon Singleton walked before Jason Castro's single up the middle brought around Springer.
Jonathan Villar singled to lead off the third. Two batters later, Springer reached with a single and both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. Singleton's groundout plated Villar to make it a 2-0 game.
Hill answered back with a blast to left in the fourth to get the Diamondbacks within one.
"He's a professional hitter and he's been in this league for a while," Keuchel said of Hill. "He knows what he likes, and I put it right in his wheelhouse."
Carter countered with a shot of his own over the wall in left during the home half, staking the Astros to a 3-1 lead.
The Astros went up 5-1 in the seventh after Carter crushed another homer, this time to right field. Presley singled, Marwin Gonzalez walked and Villar bunted to load the bases before Springer's sacrifice fly brought around Presley.
