Vogt, Cespedes help A's down Angels

Jun 12, 2014 - 6:14 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Stephen Vogt belted a two-run homer, Yoenis Cespedes shined at the plate and in the field and the Oakland Athletics defeated the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, 7-1, to avoid getting swept by their AL West rivals.

Cespedes went 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI and added his ninth outfield assist by nabbing Albert Pujols trying to stretch a double into a triple in the sixth.

"Cespedes has had a few assists this season," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "He throws it right on the money and continues to amaze."

Tommy Milone (4-3) lasted 6 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on six hits for Oakland, which dropped the first two of the three-game series and had lost four of six coming in.

The A's did most of their damage against Angels starter Jered Weaver (7-5), who was charged with four runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings.

"It was a rough outing," Weaver admitted. "I've had better games. Sometimes you have to tip your cap to the opposition. Milone pitched well."

Josh Hamilton drove in the Angels' only run with a game-tying RBI double in the fourth, but the hosts retook the lead in the sixth with three runs.

Cespedes led off with a double, moved to third on Brandon Moss' infield single and raced home on Jed Lowrie's sacrifice fly to center.

Vogt ended Weaver's night by taking him over the right-field wall for his first home run of the season and a 4-1 Oakland lead.

A day after throwing out Howie Kendrick at the plate with a 300-foot missile on the fly, Cespedes again showed off his world-class arm in the home sixth by firing a pinpoint laser from the wall in left-center to deny an overly- aggressive Pujols trying to leg out a triple.

Ryan Cook relieved Milone with two on in the seventh and struck out pinch- hitter David Freese to end the threat. The Angels had two more baserunners in the eighth, but Luke Gregerson retired Hamilton and C.J. Cron.

Oakland scored three more times in the ninth. Coco Crisp singled in a run, Eric Sogard, trotted home on a botched pickoff attempt by Cory Rasmus, and Cespedes, who opened the scoring with an RBI single in the third inning, capped it by knocking in Crisp again with a base hit.

Jim Johnson hurled the ninth to officially snap the Angels' five-game winning streak.

Game Notes

The A's went 5-4 on their nine-game road trip, their 10th consecutive road swing of .500 or better ... Milone has not lost since May 3, winning each of his last four decisions over a seven-start span. He has not allowed more than three runs in any of those outings ... The Angels went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine.
