Ellsbury homers as Yankees complete sweep of Mariners

Jun 13, 2014 - 7:00 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jacoby Ellsbury hit a two-run homer and made a great catch in center field as the New York Yankees beat the Seattle Mariners, 6-3, to complete a three-game sweep.

Ellsbury, who also scored twice, extended his hitting streak to 16 games. He left in the seventh inning with right hip tightness.

Derek Jeter went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored for the Yankees, who recorded a sweep in Seattle for the first time since a four-game set from Aug. 5-8, 1999. Alfonso Soriano knocked in two runs.

"Fans have always been good to me here," said Jeter, who made his final career appearance at Safeco Field. "Even when they get on you a little bit, they still respect you. They were awesome."

New York starter Chase Whitley (2-0) allowed two runs on five hits while striking out six over 7 2/3 innings.

Logan Morrison hit a solo homer and ended with two RBI for the Mariners, who saw starter Roenis Elias (5-5) give up six runs on six hits with three walks over 3 1/3 innings.

"I thought he had some good stuff," Mariners catcher Mike Zunino said of Elias. "Obviously we had a big crowd today, and maybe he was a little excited and ready to go and let that get the best of him a little bit. But I thought his stuff was good, he just left it up a hair."

The Yankees jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Jeter singled and scored on Ellsbury's blast to right.

The Mariners cut the deficit in half on Morrison's homer in the second.

New York tacked on two more runs in the third. Jeter singled and Ellsbury walked before Mark Teixeira flied out. Soriano followed with a two-run double to left-center field.

The Yankees added to their lead in the fourth. Elias put men on second and third with one out before exiting. Jeter greeted Dominic Leone with a two-run single to right.

Seattle scored once in the fifth. Brad Miller doubled and raced home on James Jones' two-out single. Ellsbury then climbed the wall in center to rob Robinson Cano of a possible two-run homer.

New York made some defensive adjustments as Ellsbury exited in the seventh, with Brett Gardner moving from left to center and Soriano going from right to left. Gardner then made an incredible snag of his own, taking a potential solo homer away from Zunino.

The Mariners plated a run in the ninth. Stefen Romero led off with a deep fly ball to right that Ichiro Suzuki caught at the wall. Dustin Ackley doubled and scored on Morrison's ground-rule double.

Game Notes

Cano extended his hitting streak to 10 games ... Elias had won two straight starts coming into Thursday's game ... The Mariners went 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position and stranded six.
