Latos makes season debut for Reds against Brewers

Jun 14, 2014 - 1:01 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Cincinnati Reds will receive a boost in their rotation when Mat Latos comes off the disabled list Saturday to pitch against the Milwaukee Brewers in the middle test of a three-game series.

Latos has been on the DL all season after having surgery on his right elbow in October and an operation on his left knee in February. Latos made four rehab starts at Triple-A Louisville and went 2-0 with a 2.33 earned run average, allowing 17 hits with 13 strikeouts and seven walks.

The right-handed Latos is 28-11 the past two seasons with Cincinnati and has a career mark of 2-4 with a 3.64 ERA in eight starts against Milwaukee.

"He brings a lot to the table," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "He brings a lot of wins. He has a real high winning percentage as a young Major League starting pitcher and a lot of wins for us the last two years."

Latos is 15 K's shy of 800 in his career.

The Reds held on to defeat the Brewers, 6-5, on Friday night and Billy Hamilton's RBI single in the top of the ninth was the game-winner. The Reds had a 5-1 lead until Milwaukee rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Hamilton then came through to lift Cincinnati to its third straight win and fifth in seven tries.

"Billy came up huge," Price said. "That's a huge hit, simply because it doesn't put (Todd) Frazier in that two-out situation."

Brandon Phillips had two RBI and Zack Cozart went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Frazier and Jay Bruce also had two hits apiece in the win.

Reds starting pitcher Homer Bailey gave up four runs in 6 1/3 innings, while Jonathan Broxton got the win with a scoreless eighth and Aroldis Chapman struck out two batters in the ninth for his 11th save.

Cincinnati is slated to visit Pittsburgh for three games on this road trip.

The Brewers were coming off a 5-3 road trip and still lead the NL Central by 4 1/2 games ahead of St. Louis. Closer Francisco Rodriguez gave up Hamilton's RBI single in the ninth to suffer the loss and starter Matt Garza pitched well in the no-decision, allowing five runs (1 earned) in seven innings.

Khris Davis homered to highlight Milwaukee's four-run seventh inning and both Scooter Gennett and Jonathan Lucroy ended with two hits and an RBI. Carlos Gomez and Aramis Ramirez drove in runs in defeat.

"I liked the effort and it shows with us coming back and tying it," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said.

Yovani Gallardo draws the start for the Brewers Saturday and he is 4-4 with a 3.71 earned run average. Gallardo is 2-1 in his last three decisions and pitched seven scoreless innings of four-hit ball in Sunday's 1-0 win at Pittsburgh. He struck out eight batters and walked one.

Gallardo has made 21 career starts against the Reds and is 7-7 with a 4.44 ERA in that stretch. The right-hander has a 2-2 record in seven starts at Miller Park this season.

The Brewers are 1-4 against the Reds this season.
