Kazmir, A's put an end to Yankees win streak
Jun 15, 2014 - 6:02 AM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Eric Sogard knocked in two runs and Scott Kazmir tossed seven sterling innings, as Oakland topped the Yankees by a 5-1 count in Saturday's second edition of a three-game series.Kazmir (8-2) allowed one unearned run on three hits, walking three and fanning two for the Athletics, who bounced back from a 7-0 defeat in Friday's opener.
"He pitches. He lives on the edges and changes speeds really well," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Kazmir.
John Jaso and Andy Parrino drove in a run each for Oakland.
Kelly Johnson doubled and scored the lone run for the Yankees, whose four-game win streak came to an end. Hiroki Kuroda (4-5) lasted just 4 2/3 frames, charged in the loss for five hits and four runs.
A faulty light tower atop the left-field bleachers caused the bottom of the fourth to be delayed 38 minutes, and when play resumed, the A's continued to push.
Sogard walked to kick off the home fifth, Coco Crisp reached on a bunt single, both advanced on New York catcher John Ryan Murphy's passed ball and Jaso plated one with a groundout. Murphy's second passed ball of the inning then brought in Crisp and the hosts led 4-1.
Kuroda was pulled for Shawn Kelley after Brandon Moss hit a two-out single, but Yoenis Cespedes fanned to keep it a three-run game.
Kazmir retired the side in order to cap his outing in the sixth, then Dan Otero followed suit in the seventh and eighth. Sean Doolittle closed out the victory with a 1-2-3 ninth.
"You have to get contributions across the board all the way through the lineup," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "You don't always want to have to count on certain guys in the lineup."
Oakland touched Kuroda in the second. Cespedes walked, Stephen Vogt singled and Parrino walked ahead of a two-run hit by Sogard.
Johnson walked with two away in the third, moved to third on a Brett Gardner base hit then scored when Parrino made a bad throw to first on a Derek Jeter grounder. Jacoby Ellsbury walked to load the bases, but Alfonso Soriano's grounder turned into a force at third.
