Jays earn split with Sunday win over O's

Jun 16, 2014 - 12:10 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Dioner Navarro finished with three hits and drove in a pair of runs, leading Toronto to a 5-2 decision over Baltimore in Sunday's finale of a four-game series.

Edwin Encarnacion doubled twice among his three hits and scored twice for the Jays, who received an RBI each from Melky Cabrera, Jose Bautista and Steve Tolleson in the victory.

J.A. Happ (6-3) worked six-plus innings, allowing seven hits and one run while fanning six. Casey Janssen recorded the game's final four outs to earn his 12th save.

"Today was a big game for us," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "We came to life a little bit and Happ was outstanding. He really was. He gave us what we needed, just like he was the other night. He gave us a chance to win."

Adam Jones homered and Nelso Cruz added a run-scoring hit for the Orioles. Chris Tillman (5-4) lasted seven frames, but was charged for three runs on eight hits in defeat.

"I thought he presented himself well and had given us everything he could give us to that point," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of removing Tillman.

Cruz singled home Jones in the home sixth for the O's first burst of meaningful offense, but the hosts were behind by 3-1. Controversy arose in the eighth around a Jays player sliding into home, as it did in Saturday's contest.

Bautista walked and Encarnacion moved him to third on a ground-rule double. Brett Lawrie then bounced to deep short, where J.J. Hardy's throw home was in time, but Nick Hundley appeared to have missed a tag on Bautista as he got a piece of the plate with his hand. Replay determined a tag was made, leaving runners on first and second.

Navarro doubled in Encarnacion, then an Erik Kratz walk loaded the bases for a fielder's choice grounder from Tolleson to make it 5-1 for the Jays.

"Those were beautiful hits and they got the job done," Bautista said of Navarro's run-scoring efforts. "You've got to hit them where there's nobody playing defense."

Jones' line-drive homer to left in the home half was all the comeback the Orioles could muster.

The Jays got to Tillman in the first, as Jose Reyes led off with a single, moved up on a groundout and scored when Bautista followed with a double.

Toronto went up 2-0 in the fourth, after Encarnacion doubled and was chased home on a one-out single from Navarro. It was 3-0 in the fifth on Cabrera's sacrifice fly to plate Anthony Gose, who singled and went to third when Reyes followed with a double.

"We just needed to do a better job behind him," Showalter added. "We just didn't score enough runs."

Game Notes

Toronto's win evened the season series with Baltimore at five wins apiece, but the Jays have won four of seven at Camden Yards ... Tillman joined Jimmy Key, Rudy May, Jack Fisher and Jeff Ballard as the only O's starters to pitch seven innings without recording either a walk or a strikeout ... The Jays continue their road trip on Tuesday in the Bronx, while the Orioles kick off a six-game sojourn in Tampa Bay on Monday.
