Adams homers again as Cards complete sweep of Nats
Jun 15, 2014 - 11:25 PM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Jaime Garcia tossed seven solid innings, Matt Adams hit his third homer in as many games and the St. Louis Cardinals held off the Washington Nationals, 5-2, to complete a three-game sweep.Garcia (3-0) allowed one run on five hits while striking out six and walking two for the Cardinals, who have won six of seven. Matt Holliday hit a solo homer and ended with two RBI.
"We know the type of team that we are and the past couple days is definitely the team that we know that we're capable of," Garcia said of his team's recent success. "Everything is just clicking together right now."
Jayson Werth and Adam LaRoche each knocked in a run for the Nationals, who saw starter Doug Fister (5-2) give up four runs on seven hits over six innings. Fister had won five consecutive starts.
"The sweep hurts," Fister admitted. "You always want to win a series. You never want to get swept."
The Nationals wasted a golden scoring opportunity in the second. Scott Hairston and Ian Desmond singled and Danny Espinosa was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Hairston was out at home when Sandy Leon grounded into a fielder's choice and Fister struck out swinging.
The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead on Adams' homer in the bottom half of the frame. Allen Craig led off with a single and crossed the plate on Adams' blast to right.
Holliday added a solo homer in the third.
Washington got on the board in the fifth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Werth walked to force in a run. Ryan Zimmerman grounded out.
St. Louis got the run back in the home half. Kolten Wong tripled to right and scored on Holliday's sacrifice fly.
The Cardinals took a 5-1 lead on Craig's RBI double in the seventh.
The Nationals scored once in the ninth. Sam Freeman put men on first and second with two outs before handing the ball over to Trevor Rosenthal. Anthony Rendon greeted Rosenthal with a single to load the bases. LaRoche came on as a pinch-hitter and walked to force in a run. Werth's pop foul out ended the game.
