Lucroy homers twice as Brewers beat D'backs
Jun 18, 2014 - 6:41 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Jonathan Lucroy hit a pair of homers, including a grand slam during a five-run seventh inning to lift the Milwaukee Brewers over the Arizona Diamondbacks, 7-5, on Tuesday.Aramis Ramirez added a solo homer for the Brewers, who have won the first two contests of this four-game series. Elian Herrera knocked in a run.
Milwaukee starter Kyle Lohse (8-2) allowed four runs -- three earned -- on four hits with three walks over six innings. He also plunked two batters.
Martin Prado drove in two runs for the Diamondbacks, who have lost six of seven. Roger Kieschnick hit his first career homer.
Arizona starter Mike Bolsinger, who was recalled from Triple-A Reno prior to the game, gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out six over 6 1/3 innings. Bolsinger pitched in place of Wade Miley, whose scheduled start was pushed back a day to Wednesday.
Evan Marshall (2-2) allowed three runs on two hits without recording an out in the seventh. He was ejected after intentionally hitting Ryan Braun.
Milwaukee pulled within 4-2 on Lucroy's solo homer in the sixth.
The Brewers followed with a five-run seventh. Jean Segura led off with a triple and scored on Herrera's sacrifice fly. Marshall came in from the bullpen and immediately ran into trouble. Pinch-hitter Lyle Overbay singled and Scooter Gennett doubled.
Marshall was ejected after throwing behind Braun and then drilling him with a pitch. He was greeted in the dugout by high fives from all his teammates after hitting Braun. But Lucroy made Arizona pay by smacking Brad Ziegler's first pitch over the wall in left-center field. Lucroy's third career grand slam made it 7-4 Milwaukee.
Brewers manager Ron Roenicke called Lucroy's at-bat "probably the best I've ever seen."
"After they smoke our guy, they bring in their closer, the first pitch he sees he hits a grand slam. There's no way an at-bat can get bigger than that," he said.
"It was a fastball," Ziegler said. "I got too much plate, left it up a little bit. He's a really good hitter right now. He's been on fire the whole season."
The Diamondbacks got within two when Kieschnick started the ninth with a homer off Francisco Rodriguez. Singles by pinch-hitter Cody Ross and Gerardo Parra put runners at first and second with one out, but Rodriguez struck out Paul Goldschmidt. Miguel Montero grounded out to end the game, and Rodriguez picked up his major league-leading 22nd save.
Arizona jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Didi Gregorius was hit by a pitch, Parra singled and Goldschmidt walked to load the bases with no outs. Montero followed with an RBI single to left. The Diamondbacks tacked on two more on back-to-back RBI groundouts by Prado and David Peralta.
Ramirez led off the second with a homer to left.
Arizona went back up by three on Prado's RBI single in the fifth. Goldschmidt worked a two-out walk, moved to second when Montero reached on Gennett's throwing error and raced home on Prado's hit to right-center field.
Game Notes
It was the fourth career two-homer game for Lucroy ... To make room for Bolsinger, the Diamondbacks optioned pitcher Will Harris to Reno ... Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez sat out his second consecutive game with a sore hamstring ... Goldschmidt had a 10-game hitting streak snapped.
