Crisp's single helps A's edge Red Sox in 10
Jun 22, 2014 - 3:09 AM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Coco Crisp singled home Alberto Callaspo in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Oakland Athletics a fifth straight win, a 2-1 decision over Boston that continued the Red Sox' struggles at the O.co Coliseum.Callaspo drew a five-pitch walk against Edward Mujica (2-3) to begin Oakland's half of the 10th and was promptly moved to second on Nick Punto's sacrifice. Crisp then laced the first pitch he saw from a just-entered Koji Uehara into right field to bring in Callaspo and lift the A's to a seventh win in eight games.
The loss was Boston's third straight in this four-game series and 11th in its last 12 visits to the Coliseum.
"We are very close to becoming a team that will go on a run for an extended period," said Red Sox manager John Farrell "We've got a number of really strong things in place."
Brock Holt went 3-for-4 for the Red Sox and Boston starter Rubby De La Rosa allowed just one run on four hits while striking out seven through seven strong innings.
Jesse Chavez also pitched extremely well for Oakland, yielding only three hits through seven scoreless innings in a no-decision.
"His preparation to start every day is flawless," praised A's manager Bob Melvin. "He knows what the strengths and weaknesses of the hitters are. He knows what his strengths and weaknesses are."
Chavez had a no-hitter going until Holt led off the top of the sixth with a single and exited with a 1-0 lead that didn't hold up after the Red Sox scored a controversial run in the top of the eighth.
After David Ortiz advanced Dustin Pedroia to third with a two-out single off Luke Gregerson, the Oakland reliever nearly came up with an inning-ending strikeout of Mike Napoli after catcher John Jaso appeared to have caught a foul tip. Home plate umpire Quinn Wolcott ruled the swing to be a foul ball, however, and the play was not reviewable under the current system.
Gregerson's next pitch landed in the dirt and in front of the plate, with Pedroia sprinting in from third and sliding across just as Jaso got to the ball.
Melvin was later ejected by Wolcott in between innings after coming out to argue the call.
Boston later threatened in the top of the 10th when Jackie Bradley Jr. and Holt delivered back-to-back singles, but Dan Otero (6-1) got Pedroia to fly out and fanned Ortiz to keep it a 1-1 game and set up Crisp's heroics.
While Chavez worked around four walks over the game's first five innings, De La Rosa was dominant except for a brief hiccup in the third. Stephen Vogt drilled a triple off the wall in right center and crossed the plate on Callaspo's fly ball that was hauled in by a diving Holt in right field.
Game Notes
Oakland closer Sean Doolittle tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to extend his scoreless streak to 24 1/3 innings, the longest active streak in the American League ... The Red Sox have now dropped 10 of their last 12 overall on the road ... Vogt recorded two of the Athletics' six hits ... Boston fell to 11-17 in one-run games this season.
