Brewers top struggling Rockies
Jun 22, 2014 - 2:24 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Mark Reynolds went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored to help guide the Milwaukee Brewers to a 9-4 win over the Colorado Rockies in the middle contest of a three-game series at Coors Field on Saturday.Aramis Ramirez had a solo home run and scored twice, while Rickie Weeks and Khris Davis each recorded an RBI for the Brewers, who have won three straight and eight of their last 11.
Wily Peralta (8-5) allowed four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits in 7 2/3 solid innings to win his fourth straight start, all on the road.
In his first time back on a big-league mound since 2012, Christian Friedrich (0-1) was tagged for nine runs -- four earned -- on seven hits and three walks to absorb the loss.
Corey Dickerson connected on a two-run blast and finished a triple shy of the cycle and Justin Morneau drove in a pair for the Rockies, who have dropped five straight.
The Brewers capitalized on multiple Rockies mistakes in the second and third innings, including a bizarre three-run wild pitch to seize control of the game.
"It was unfortunate," said Rockies catcher Michael McKenry about the wild pitch. "I hate that those three runs scored."
In the second, Carlos Gomez singled off third baseman Josh Rutledge's glove and advanced to second on the error. Davis' grounder to third was bobbled by Rutledge, whose throw to first was off the mark, allowing Gomez to score.
Reynolds' RBI single up the middle plated Davis. Peralta grounded into what looked like a double play but second baseman DJ LeMahieu's throw to first went into the seats, allowing Reynolds to score. Weeks capped the inning with a triple to center to make it 4-2.
With runners on first and second in the third, Reynolds lined a double to center to score Jonathan Lucroy. After an intentional walk, a wild pitch cleared the bases.
The pitch went over the glove of catcher McKenry and bounced off the bricks behind home plate, first scoring Ramirez. McKenry's underhand throw was too high for Friedrich at home, which allowed Reynolds to score. Friedrich, ball in hand and head down, paid no attention to Jean Segura, who hurried home from third to beat the tag.
"I don't think I've seen that since Little League," said Reynolds. "It was a nice heads-up play by Segura."
Ramirez blasted a leadoff homer over the center-field wall in the fifth to increase the lead to 9-2.
Dickerson's two-run homer to left cut the deficit to 9-4 in the sixth. Morneau reached on a base hit to start the inning.
In the first, Morneau's two-run single to left put the Rockies on the board.
Game Notes
Gomez extended his hitting streak to 17 games, going 2-for-5. He has reached base safely in 34 consecutive games, the longest current streak in the majors ... Friedrich is the 11th pitcher to start a game for Colorado in 2014 ... The Brewers are a major league-best 26-15 on the road ... Colorado went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
