Giants open homestand versus Padres
Jun 23, 2014 - 2:45 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants will begin a 10-game homestand Monday with the first of three straight games versus the NL West-rival San Diego Padres at AT&T Park. The Giants will also host Cincinnati and St. Louis, and have a 23-15 record in the bay area this season. The NL West-leading Giants won the last two games of a three-game weekend set at Arizona and took the series with Sunday's 4-1 win behind a strong start from Madison Bumgarner.
Bumgarner allowed an unearned run and two hits in eight innings, striking out seven batters and walking only two.
"It's probably right up there with the best I've felt this year," said Bumgarner. "I don't know if was the best, that's hard to say. But it's right up there, that's for sure."
Sergio Romo worked around a hit in the ninth to record his 22nd save.
Brandon Crawford and Joe Panik each had two hits and an RBI for the Giants, who have just three wins in the last 12 games and lead the NL West by four ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Matt Cain draws the start for the Giants Monday and is 1-5 with a 4.52 earned run average this season. Cain lost his second straight start in last Tuesday's 8-2 setback at Chicago and allowed eight runs -- seven earned -- and 10 hits in five innings. He has pitched five innings in each of his past two starts, allowing 11 runs over that span.
Cain, a right-hander, is 7-12 in 32 career starts against the Padres and 1-2 in four home starts. He hasn't earned a win over the Padres at home since April 21, 2009.
The Padres lost two of three to the Dodgers this weekend and sustained a 2-1 loss Sunday. Eric Stults suffered the hard-luck loss and fell to 2-10 on the season after he gave up both runs in seven innings.
Carlos Quentin was credited with the lone RBI for the Padres, who are only 4-10 in their last 14 games and haven't won a series since taking two of three from the White Sox in Chicago from May 30 - June 1.
The news before Sunday's finale was the Padres relieving general manager Josh Byrnes of his duties.
"This ownership group is committed to fielding a team that consistently competes for postseason play," said Padres president and CEO Mike Dee in a statement. "Thus far this season, the results on the field have been mixed at best and clearly have not lived up to expectations. After a lengthy evaluation of every facet of our baseball operations, we have decided to make this change today."
Padres right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne is expected to make his MLB debut Monday and has seen action between Double-A and Triple-A. Andrew Cashner was expected to start the series opener with the Giants, but was scratched.
San Diego is 13-23 away from home and has split six matchups with San Francisco this season.
