Orioles, White Sox go at it again in Baltimore
Jun 24, 2014 - 2:49 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - For at least one night, Chris Davis woke up the echoes of 2013.The 2013 major-league home run leader connected for a walk-off blast to win Monday's opener at Camden Yards, and he'll try to continue the magic on Tuesday night when the Baltimore Orioles host the Chicago White Sox in the middle game of a three-game series.
Davis hit 53 home runs last season, but arrived this week hitting just .216. He was benched by manager Buck Showalter, who claimed he was aiming to get Delmon Young more playing time.
"Lately I just haven't been very good," Davis said. "I know I'm going to get an opportunity to come out of it."
Showalter said Davis will start Tuesday.
"There's no woe is me," Showalter said. "He knows at some point the club's going to need a good at-bat from him and he prepared himself for it."
He hit a grand slam on Tuesday when Miguel Gonzalez defeated Tampa Bay, and will get another chance to help Gonzalez out when the right-hander starts against the White Sox.
Gonzalez was shelved with an oblique muscle strain before defeating the Rays after allowing four runs on eight hits in five innings. Prior to the stint on the disabled list, he'd compiled a 2.93 earned run average across four starts.
"I felt great," Gonzalez said. "Next time, (I) just (have to go) out there and try to make pitches."
He faced Jose Quintana in his lone start against the White Sox last August and will face the same mound foe while trying to add another defeat of Chicago.
Quintana had lost three straight starts, then got a tough-luck no-decision against Minnesota in his last outing after allowing two runs in seven innings of the team's 4-2 loss on Thursday.
In his last four starts, the White Sox have scored six runs.
"He just continues to pitch," manager Robin Ventura said. "I don't think he sits there and begs for runs, but I'm sure he'd like some runs.''
In his last two meetings with Baltimore, Quintana has allowed three runs while getting zero wins.
On Monday, Davis made the most of his pinch-hitting appearance by smacking a three-run homer that lifted the Orioles to a 6-4 victory.
Caleb Joseph and Adam Jones both homered earlier and Young finished 3-for-4 for Baltimore. Brad Brach (1-0) earned the win after not allowing a hit across the eighth and ninth innings. Orioles starter Wei-Yin Chen gave up three runs on six hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings of work.
Jose Abreu homered among his two hits and drove in three runs for the White Sox. Starter Chris Sale gave up two runs and a career-high 11 hits in six innings.
Baltimore went 4-3 against Chicago last season.
