Alvarez leads Marlins into 3rd test with Phils

Jun 25, 2014 - 2:32 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Henderson Alvarez has thrived pitching at Marlins Park this season. The problems for the right-hander have come on the road.

Alvarez takes the mound for Miami Wednesday aiming for his first road win of the year when the Marlins continue a four-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies. He is 4-1 with a 1.44 ERA in eight home starts, but 0-2 with a 3.79 ERA in seven away starts in 2014.

All told, it's been eight starts (0-3) since Alvarez won his last road game, Sept. 14, 2013 in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the New York Mets.

Alvarez brings an overall seven-game unbeaten (2-0) streak into tonight's game. He blanked the Mets over 6 1/3 innings on Friday and has put up zeroes in four starts during the unbeaten stretch. His last loss came May 11 at San Diego.

A.J. Burnett, who spent the first seven years of his career pitching for the Marlins, counters for the Phillies. The right-hander is coming off his first complete game of the season, a seven-hitter in a 5-1 triumph at St. Louis Friday.

Burnett is 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA in four career games versus Miami. He didn't get a decision in an April 11 contest against the Marlins at Citizens Bank Park when he walked six men over 4 1/3 innings.

Last night, Marlon Byrd crushed a two-run homer to power the Phillies to a 7-4 win. Cody Asche doubled in two runs for the Phillies, who snapped a three-game skid, where they scored a combined four runs.

"It makes a big difference getting runs up on the board," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg.

Coming off his best big league outing, David Buchanan (4-3) had another effective performance. He tossed five innings, allowing two runs on six hits and four walks to win his third straight start.

In his second career start, Andrew Heaney (0-2) yielded five runs on four hits while fanning five across five-plus innings.

Garrett Jones connected on a two-run homer and Casey McGehee had an RBI for Miami, which has lost three of its last four contests.

"We had quite a few guys on base early in that game. Had we been able to get that big hit early on, maybe we could have kept it a little closer game," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.

Philadelphia leads the season series, 5-3. The Phillies have beaten the Marlins nine of 11 and 14 of the last 18 times the teams have played at Citizens Bank Park. That includes a three-game sweep from April 11-13.
