D-backs try for quick sweep of Indians

Jun 25, 2014 - 2:43 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Arizona Diamondbacks shoot for a quick sweep of the Cleveland Indians when the two clubs tangle Wednesday at Chase Field.

The Diamondbacks squeezed out a 9-8 win in 14 innings on Tuesday thanks to Aaron Hill's RBI single that scored Gerardo Parra. David Peralta hit a solo home run and Ender Inciarte added an RBI single in the 11th inning to keep Arizona alive and improve to 3-5 on this nine-game homestand.

"It feels really good," Inciarte said of his clutch hit in the 11th. "I've been working hard and trying to get results. I feel like I'm finally getting confident again. It was good night for me. I helped the team and that's what mattered the most."

Parra ended with five hits and scored twice, while Inciarte, Hill and Miguel Montero had two RBI apiece for the D-backs. Josh Collmenter came on in relief to pick up the win with a scoreless 14th inning.

Wade Miley started for Arizona and gave up five runs -- four earned -- in four innings.

After hosting the Indians, Arizona, which is 15-29 at home, will pack its bags for San Diego, Pittsburgh and Atlanta.

Chase Anderson's 5-0 start is old news and the right-hander is hoping to stop a personal two-game slide when he takes the mound Wednesday for the D-backs. Anderson had his streak come to an end in a loss at Los Angeles on June 13, then fell to Milwaukee in last Thursday's 4-1 setback.

The Brewers reached Anderson for three runs -- two earned -- in six innings and Anderson is 5-2 with a 3.18 ERA. The right-hander out of the University of Oklahoma has never faced Cleveland and is 3-1 with a 3.86 ERA in four home starts.

Cleveland opened an eight-game road trip with last night's tough loss and reliever Mark Lowe gave up the game-winning run. Indians starter Justin Masterson was reached for five runs and seven hits in four innings.

Carlos Santana ended with four hits, including a home run, and Yan Gomes posted three hits and three RBI. Lonnie Chisenhall drove in two runs for the Indians, who have lost four in a row and nine of the last 13 games.

Arizona went 7-for-24 with men in scoring position, while Cleveland was 4- for-16 and left 12 runners on base.

"Both teams were spent. Neither team had anybody left to hit. Both teams stranded runners. Both teams got to the starters early. There wasn't a whole lot of room to maneuver," Indians manager Terry Francona said.

The Indians are still just six games off the AL Central lead, but have a 14-25 ledger as the visitor. They will also visit Seattle and Los Angeles on the trip.

Corey Kluber will lead the Indians on the hill Wednesday and is winless (0-2) in his last four starts. The Detroit Tigers reached him for two runs and eight hits in seven innings of a 6-4 victory on Friday, sending Kluber to a 6-5 mark with a 3.30 ERA.

Kluber has allowed at least two runs in each of his last five starts and eight times in the previous nine trips to the mound. The righty will make his first appearance against Arizona and is 3-3 in eight road assignments.

The D-backs are 6-7 all-time against the Indians and have lost five of the previous seven meetings between the teams. Cleveland won two of three games against Arizona from June 27-29, 2011 at Chase Field.
