Ellis lifts Dodgers over Royals

Jun 26, 2014 - 6:15 AM Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - A.J. Ellis brought in the winning run in the eighth inning and the Los Angeles Dodgers grabbed a 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals in the finale of a three-game series.

Dee Gordon was 4-for-5 with two runs scored while Matt Kemp hit a solo home run for the Dodgers, who have won seven of their last nine.

Dan Haren was lifted in the fifth inning after giving up four runs on five hits. Jamey Wright (3-2) went 2 2/3 innings to get the win.

Lorenzo Cain and Jarrod Dyson each hit a solo home run for the Royals, who have lost six of seven.

James Shields allowed four runs on seven hits over seven innings. Wade Davis (5-2) allowed the winning run to take the loss.

"Today just wasn't our day," said Shields. "I didn't do my job of throwing a quality start."

In the eighth, Adrian Gonzalez singled and Andre Ethier later got on base with a hit. After Justin Turner reached on a fielder's choice that saw Gonzalez nailed at home, Scott Van Slyke walked. Ellis was then hit by a pitch to bring home Ethier for a 5-4 lead.

J.P. Howell and Brandon League worked a scoreless eighth inning.

Brian Wilson then came on in the ninth and gave up a one-out single to Danny Valencia, who was replaced by Pedro Ciriaco and he quickly stole second. Cain then smoked a liner that appeared headed for right field, but Van Slyke made a leaping grab and doubled up Ciriaco as Wilson got his first save in two years.

"I think today was a really good game," Van Slyke said. "They kept pushing back at us and we found ways to score and we found out winning. Good game, good series, good road trip."

Cain homered to leadoff the first for Kansas City, but Kemp returned the favor in the second for Los Angeles to tie the game.

The Dodgers went ahead in the third as Gordon tripled with one out and scored when Shields was called for a balk. Yasiel Puig then tripled and Gonzalez followed with a sac fly for a 3-1 lead.

Kansas City got one back in the fourth on an RBI single from Mike Moustakas that scored Alex Gordon, who had reached on a fielder's choice and stole second.

Los Angeles got the run back on an RBI double from Puig in the fifth, but the Royals rallied in the home half to tie the game.

Dyson led off the frame with his first home run of the season and Cain followed with a single two batters later. After Eric Hosmer walked, Jamey Wright took the mound and a wild pitch moved up both runners. Billy Butler then grounded out to score Cain and tie the game.
