Happ, Jays blank White Sox

Jun 27, 2014 - 6:05 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - J.A. Happ tossed 7 2/3 scoreless innings as the Toronto Blue Jays blanked the Chicago White Sox, 7-0, in the opener of a four-game set.

Happ (7-4) struck out eight and scattered four hits while walking two for Toronto, which had dropped six of its last nine games coming in.

"The goal was to be aggressive," said Happ. "To force contact early, use all four quadrants and just be aggressive."

Adam Lind posted three hits and three RBI in the triumph, while Jose Reyes had four hits, two runs scored and an RBI.

Scott Carroll (2-4) yielded five runs on nine hits and two walks over five innings for the White Sox, who have dropped seven of their last eight contests.

"We didn't play very well behind (Carroll)," said White Sox manager Robin Ventura. "We just have to play better behind him."

The Blue Jays plated two runs in the first inning, one in the second, two in the fourth, another in the seventh and one last one in the eighth for their scoring total.

Reyes and Melky Cabrera began Toronto's half of the first with singles before Lind brought home Reyes with a double down the right-field line. Cabrera also scored on right fielder Moises Sierra's throwing error to the plate that got past catcher Adrian Nieto.

Juan Francisco worked a leadoff walk in the second and later came around on Reyes' triple into right-center that bounced off the top of the wall. The triple was reviewed to see if it was a home run, but the play stood as called.

Anthony Gose and Reyes reached with two-out singles in the fourth and a Cabrera free pass loaded the bases. Lind then rolled a single back up the middle to plate Gose and Reyes for a 5-0 lead.

Cabrera coaxed a leadoff walk in the seventh and scored two batters later on Edwin Encarnacion's two-bagger into right-center. Cabrera's RBI groundout in the eighth made it 7-0.

Game Notes

The Blue Jays were 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position, while the White Sox finished 0-for-10 ... Chicago center fielder Adam Eaton was replaced by Leury Garcia in the first inning due to cramps in his left leg.
