Porcello tosses shutout as Rangers' slide reaches 8
Jun 27, 2014 - 5:43 AM Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Rick Porcello tossed his first career shutout and the Detroit Tigers beat the Texas Rangers, 6-0, in the finale of a three-game set.Porcello (10-4) struck out six and scattered three hits while walking three for the Tigers, who won their seventh straight game. Miguel Cabrera posted four hits, an RBI and a run scored in the triumph.
"That is extremely special to me," said Porcello. "The other thing that's special is that we won the first six on this road trip. I'm happy that we are all back to playing good baseball and we're all contributing."
Nick Martinez (1-5) yielded four runs on six hits and five walks over 2 1/3 innings for Texas, which dropped its eighth consecutive tilt.
"Guys getting some base hits and getting hits with runners in scoring position. That's what it's going to take," said Rangers manager Ron Washington. "It's just as simple as that. We have an opportunity to cash them in. We're just not doing it."
The Tigers plated a run in the second, three in the third, one in the fourth and another in the eighth for their six runs.
Torii Hunter worked a bases-loaded walk in the second to open the scoring.
Victor Martinez coaxed a free pass to begin the third and after J.D. Martinez flied out, Nick Castellanos whacked a double to left to put runners on second and third. Austin Jackson's base hit into left center brought home Victor Martinez and Castellanos.
Walks by Alex Avila and Eugenio Suarez loaded the bases, and Scott Baker replaced Nick Martinez on the mound. Ian Kinsler's base hit to left plated Jackson, but Hunter grounded into double play to end the inning.
Back-to-back singles by Cabrera and Victor Martinez in the fourth put runners on the corners before J.D. Martinez lifted a sacrifice fly to center.
Cabrera's RBI double in the eighth capped the scoring.
