Dodgers blank Cardinals in pitchers' duel

Jun 27, 2014 - 5:24 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Turner singled in the only run of the game in the eighth inning to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 1-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a four-game set.

Juan Uribe, activated off the disabled list before the game, scored the winning run while Miguel Rojas had two hits for the Dodgers, who have won eight of their last 10 games.

Josh Beckett pitched seven strong innings, giving up just four hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Brian Wilson (1-2) got the win for tossing a flawless eighth inning.

"He's been pretty amazing this year," said Los Angeles manager Don Mattingly about Beckett. "That's a good hitting club over there. He used all his pitches tonight. This was kind of like a playoff game."

Adam Wainwright (10-4) suffered the tough-luck loss as he gave up just one run on five hits with a walk and seven strikeouts in eight innings of work for the Cardinals, who had won four of five coming in.

"It was a tough loss," said Wainwright. "I felt I threw the ball well. I left a couple over the plate in the eighth inning and they got a hold of them. We faced a good pitcher over there. It's disappointing, but I'm not going to hang my head about it."

Uribe led off the eighth with a single and moved to second on Drew Butera's sacrifice bunt. Rojas then beat out an infield single before Turner dropped a pinch-hit single to left and Turner came home for a 1-0 lead.

Kenley Jansen struck out Matt Holliday to start the ninth before Matt Adams punched a single to left. Peter Bourjos came on to run for Adams and appeared to steal second base, but his leg came off the bag on the tag and he was called out. Jhonny Peralta then lined out to give Jansen his 24th save of the season.

St. Louis left runners on first and second in the fourth when Allen Craig struck out to end the inning.

Wainwright carried a no-hitter into the sixth, but Rojas led off the frame with a single to break it up.

In the seventh, Craig doubled with two outs and Jon Jay followed with a single to left. Matt Kemp fielded the ball on the run and went home with the throw, nailing Craig at the plate to end the inning.
