Freeman powers Braves past Phillies
Jun 28, 2014 - 5:43 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Freddie Freeman's three-run homer led the Atlanta Braves to a 4-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in the opener of a four-game set on Friday.Freeman finished the game with three hits, four RBI and a run scored and Andrelton Simmons scored twice for the Braves, who snapped a string of four straight losses to the Phillies.
Starter Julio Teheran (7-5) tossed seven strong innings allowing just two runs -- one earned -- on six hits with no walks and nine strikeouts to earn the win.
Ben Revere had three hits and a run scored while Jimmy Rollins and Marlon Byrd each drove in a run for Philadelphia, which has dropped two of its last three games.
Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick (3-8) was tagged with the loss after giving up all four runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts across eight innings.
The Braves opened the scoring in the first. B.J. Upton singled and Simmons walked before Freeman's first-pitch blast to center gave Atlanta an early 3-0 lead.
In the second, Freeman gave the Braves a 4-0 advantage with an RBI double to right, scoring Simmons from first.
"It's the last road series of this long trip and we want to go out and get some momentum going back home," Freeman said.
The Phillies got on the board during the fourth. Revere tripled to lead off the frame and was brought home by Rollins' ground out. Chase Utley singled and Ryan Howard reached on Simmons' error before Byrd's RBI single to deep left cut the deficit in half.
Craig Kimbrel came on to pitch the ninth. Byrd walked to start the frame and two batters later, John Mayberry's deep fly ball to center was just shy of leaving the park, but Upton came up with the catch. Kimbrel struck out Domonic Brown for the third out to earn his 23rd save of the season.
"We've had a couple of balls hit hard, but they've been right at people," Howard said. "It's a matter of finding real estate."
