Seattle hopes to continue rolling against Tribe
Jun 28, 2014 - 2:18 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Winners of six of their last seven outings, the Seattle Mariners try to keep the good times rolling Saturday as they tangle with the Cleveland Indians in the second of a three-game set at Safeco Field.Seattle, which is actually one game under .500 at home (20-21), assembled a solid pitching effort on Friday night as six hurlers combined to pick up the 3-2 win over the Tribe. Starter Chris Young lasted the required five innings in order for him to pick up his seventh win of the campaign, allowing just a single run on four hits.
Fernando Rodney surrendered a run in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't enough to keep him from collecting his 22nd save of 2014.
"That's a good-hitting club," Young said of an Indians squad that registered seven hits. "I wasn't as sharp as I'd like to be and I probably got a little lucky tonight. They hit some balls hard right at guys. Then the bullpen came in and did a phenomenal job and the guys picked me up. It was a great team effort, a great win and good for us to bounce back."
Endy Chavez tallied a pair of hits, including his first home run of the season, and scored twice for the hosts, while Kyle Seager notched three hits during an 11-hit barrage by the Mariners.
Cleveland starter Trevor Bauer was knocked around for nine hits, leading to three runs, as he suffered his fourth setback in six decisions.
"I don't really think I've done a good job myself," noted Bauer. "That's what's most frustrating. I feel like I can do a much better job."
Michael Bourn picked up three hits for the visitors, while Jason Kipnis registered a pair of doubles as the Indians lost for the fifth time in six tries and are now sitting in third place in the AL Central, due mostly to the fact that they are a disappointing 15-26 on the road.
Seeking his first win in three weeks, Josh Tomlin is set to take the hill for the Indians tonight in the Pacific Northwest. The right-hander from Texas has just a single win in his last six appearances, that coming against the Rangers in Arlington on June 7.
More recently, Tomlin settled in against Detroit on Sunday and was touched for eight runs -- five earned -- on eight hits and a couple of walks over a mere four innings.
In terms of his all-time record versus the Mariners, Tomlin is an impressive 3-1 thanks in part to 22 strikeouts in 25 1/3 innings of work.
Going up against Tomlin will be Roenis Elias, winner of two straight and four of his last five contests. The rookie left-hander, who is only 2-3 at home this year, last pitched against Kansas City at Kauffman Stadium on Sunday in a narrow 2-1 decision.
In that contest Elias permitted just the one run on five hits and a pair of walks, while striking out five over 6 2/3 innings.
Thanks to the efforts of Elias and the rest of the Seattle pitchers on staff, the team is second in the AL in ERA with a mark of 3.25, with opponents hitting only .234 against them (second-best in the league as well).
However, from an offensive standpoint, Seattle is one of the weaker hitting teams in the league with a collective average of just .243, although they do lead with 20 triples.
