Braves beat Phils to sweep twinbill
Jun 29, 2014 - 6:08 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tommy La Stella doubled twice and drove in two runs, as Atlanta walked away with a 5-1 victory over Philadelphia in the nightcap of a Saturday doubleheader.Chris Johnson added three hits and an RBI for the Braves, who have won the first three in the four-game set, including both ends of the twinbill. Ryan Doumit homered and scored twice for the visitors.
David Hale (3-2) worked five innings for the win, scattering four hits and one run as Atlanta swept a doubleheader against the Phillies for the first time since Aug. 13, 1996 at Veterans Stadium.
"David gave us everything he had," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said of his starter. "He gave us what we wanted. He gave us an opportunity."
Cameron Rupp posted a pair of hits and Jimmy Rollins knocked in the only run for the Phillies, who dropped a 10-3 decision this afternoon.
In his Philadelphia debut, Sean O'Sullivan (0-1) exited after 5 2/3 frames, charged with eight hits and four runs while striking out three.
Atlanta moved ahead for good with three runs in the sixth.
Justin Upton kept the frame alive with a two-out single, Doumit added a hit and Johnson's single plated Upton. O'Sullivan exited for Mario Hollands, who immediately gave up a two-run double to La Stella for a 4-1 Braves edge.
Doumit slammed a ball into the right-field seats to start the eighth, then Jordan Walden and Gus Schlosser turned in scoreless frames to lock down the four-run result.
Jordan Schafer singled to begin the contest, stole second, moved to third on a Freddie Freeman groundout and scored the game's first run on an Upton single.
Philly evened the score in the home third. Rupp hit a leadoff single, Ben Revere later singled to put runners on the corners, and after Revere stole second, a Rollins fly to right plated Rupp.
"We have to have more opportunities to score runs," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "It was a tough day today."
