Final/11
Reds scored five in 11th to top Giants again
Jun 29, 2014 - 6:46 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Zack Cozart hit a go-ahead two-run single in the top of the 11th inning and the Cincinnati Reds topped the San Francisco Giants, 7-3, in the third installment of a four-game set.The game was tied 2-2 before the Reds exploded for five runs in the 11th.
Joey Votto sliced an opposite-field double into the left-field corner to begin the frame against Javier Lopez (1-1), and after an intentional walk to Brandon Phillips, both runners advanced a base on Jay Bruce's sacrifice bunt.
Devin Mesoraco was intentionally walked to load the bases with one away and Jean Machi came on to replace Lopez. Cozart then ripped a hanging forkball into center field to bring home Votto and Phillips.
Chris Heisey stepped up next and belted a triple over the head of Hunter Pence in right to plate Mesoraco and Cozart. Heisey scored on Billy Hamilton's double to right to make it 7-2 in favor of the Reds.
Jonathan Broxton (4-0) fired a scoreless 10th to notch the win.
Phillips smacked a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning, but Buster Posey's pinch-hit, RBI double in the home half tied it at 2-2 and sent the game into extras.
Starter Alfredo Simon allowed a run on three hits and a walk over seven innings for Cincinnati, which has won seven of its last eight games.
Starter Matt Cain scattered six hits and walked two over seven scoreless frames for the Giants, who have dropped 14 of their last 18 games.
The Giants had held the Reds scoreless over the first eight innings and held a 1-0 advantage before Sergio Romo walked Votto to start the ninth and Phillips followed by launching his blast into the seats in left-center.
"It was too good of a pitch to hit," Romo said of Phillips' gopher ball.
Pence singled and Pablo Sandoval walked against Aroldis Chapman to lead off the home ninth, and Posey then ripped a double to left to plate Pence.
With runners on second and third with no outs, however, Chapman bore down. With the infield in, he induced a pair of groundouts off the bats of Hector Sanchez and pinch-hitter Joaquin Arias before striking out Adam Duvall to end the threat.
"Chapman was very impressive because he stayed strong," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "He buckled down big time."
The Giants had mustered just one hit over the first four frames against Simon before finally breaking through for a run in the fifth.
Brandon Crawford hit a one-out single and Duvall whacked a double to left to put runners on second and third. Joe Panik's roller back to Simon brought home Crawford. With Duvall at third with two away, Cain laid down a bunt down the third base line, but Todd Frazier made a fine charging play to keep it at 1-0.
Arias' RBI single in the bottom of the 11th capped the scoring.
Game Notes
Broxton's ERA sits at a sparkling 0.68 ... Hamilton posted his 34th stolen base of the year ... The Reds were 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position, while San Francisco finished 2-for-11.
