Padres hope Despaigne can repeat debut vs. D-backs
Jun 29, 2014 - 1:52 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres will attempt to salvage the finale of a three-game series versus the Arizona Diamondbacks Sunday at Petco Park. The Padres hope to avoid the sweep with Odrisamer Despaigne set to take the mound this afternoon and he impressed in his major league debut in Monday's 6-0 win at San Francisco.
"I think he did a great job," Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal said. "He was right in the zone all game. He never threw anything that was way off. I knew (from pregame) that his curveball was going to be a big pitch for him."
Despaigne took over for a scratched Andrew Cashner and delivered seven scoreless innings of four-hit ball with a strikeout and no walks. The Cuban right-hander will make his Petco Park debut.
San Diego suffered a 3-1 loss on Saturday and Miguel Montero stroked a two-run homer in the sixth inning off Eric Stults, who fell to 2-11 on the season and gave up all three runs in 5 1/3 frames.
"One bad pitch," said Padres manager Bud Black of Stults. "He tried to throw a changeup down and away. He just missed his spot and Montero is a pretty good low-ball hitter."
Rene Rivera had two of San Diego's five hits and Tommy Medica knocked in the lone run in the loss, the Padres' third straight and fifth in seven tries.
The Padres will also host Cincinnati and San Francisco on this homestand.
Arizona has won back-to-back games and three in the last four tries. Montero provided the big boost Saturday and Martin Prado ended 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Diamondbacks.
"He's found a real comfort zone at the plate," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said of Montero.
Josh Collmenter got the win in the start and fired 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball with four K's and two walks. Addison Reed fired a scoreless ninth for his 19th save.
The D-backs still have to visit Pittsburgh and Atlanta on the trip, and hope rookie Mike Bolsinger can pitch them to a sweep Sunday. Bolsinger is 1-3 with a 4.78 earned run average and suffered a hard-luck loss to the Giants last Sunday, as he hurled 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball in a 4-1 defeat.
Bolsinger has never faced the Padres and has a 1-2 mark in three road starts.
Arizona is 6-2 against San Diego this season.
