A's go for Miami sweep
Jun 29, 2014 - 1:56 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Oakland Athletics try to pull off a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins when the two clubs meet Sunday afternoon. The Athletics made it two wins in a row in this series with Saturday's 7-6 win in 14 innings, as Josh Donaldson scored Brandon Moss with an RBI single in the top of the 14th. Moss reached base with a one-out double.
Oakland won its third straight game and eighth in 10 tries, and remained 4 1/2 games ahead of the LA Angels for the AL West lead. Moss had two RBI and John Jaso picked up three hits for the A's, who have won three in a row on the road.
Sonny Gray started for the A's Saturday and allowed five runs in five innings. Jim Johnson collected the win with 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief and Jeff Francis came on to get the final two outs for the save.
"I'm not used to finishing games," said Francis. "To slap hands with these guys after the game was a thrill. I always thought if I got a save, it would be the last three innings of a blowout."
Oakland outfielder Josh Reddick left the game in the fourth inning with a knee injury and is scheduled to have an MRI Sunday. Reddick was on the DL before this season with the same issue.
The A's will visit the Detroit Tigers next for three games in a battle of division leaders.
Tommy Milone gets the nod for the A's on Sunday and has a 5-3 mark to go along with a 3.89 ERA. He has won his last five decisions and did not factor in the outcome of a 7-6 loss to Boston last Sunday, as he gave up five runs in five innings.
Milone will make his second career start against the Marlins and is 2-3 in seven road assignments.
Miami has lost three in a row and eight of its last 11 games.
In Saturday's late-inning setback, Jacob Turner had to come on and pitch the final three innings and was saddled with the loss. He struck out four and allowed three hits, including Donaldson's eventual game-winner.
Nathan Eovaldi left after seven innings of work and gave up five runs.
Reed Johnson went 3-for-6 with two RBI and Giancarlo Stanton also recorded three hits in defeat. Miami, which played its second 14-inning game in the last three, is now four games off the lead in the NL East.
"You play 13 or 14 innings and you don't win, it takes a toll on you for sure," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "We have to figure out how to get that big hit and make that big play to get the win."
The Marlins lost, 5-3, in 14 innings Thursday at Philadelphia. They will host the Phillies next for three games.
Marlins outfielder Christian Yelich could come off the disabled list Sunday after being shelved with a lower back strain.
Andrew Heaney gets the nod for the Marlins Sunday and is 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA in his first two career starts. The left-hander gave up five runs in five innings of a 7-4 loss at Philadelphia on Tuesday, one start after throwing six innings of one-run ball versus the New York Mets on June 19.
