Bailey stifles Giants as Reds sweep series

Jun 30, 2014 - 1:17 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Buster Posey had the only hard-hit ball against Homer Bailey over the first six innings before he ripped another one in the seventh.

Except the second one prevented Bailey from his third no-hitter.

Bailey settled for his fourth career shutout instead as the Cincinnati Reds blanked the San Francisco Giants, 4-0, to sweep a four-game set.

Posey went the other way on an outer-half fastball to right with two outs in the seventh and Pablo Sandoval followed with a base hit to left and put runners on the corners. Bailey, though, struck out Michael Morse to end the threat and keep the Reds up 1-0.

Bailey (8-4) then breezed through the last two frames to complete the shutout.

Skip Schumaker made a nice leaping grab at the warning track in right on Posey's laser in the opening frame.

In all, Bailey struck out seven, allowed three hits and walked one for the Reds, who have won five straight and eight of their last nine.

"We have a palpable feeling of expecting to win," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "It feels great."

Bailey's second no-hitter came against San Francisco on July 2. He was perfect in that game until issuing a lead-off walk to Gregor Blanco in the seventh. It was the third time that the Giants franchise was no-hit.

Tim Hudson (7-5) fanned six and yielded two runs on five hits over eight frames for San Francisco, which has dropped 15 of its last 19 games.

"We've had a little bit of bad luck," Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford said. "I think that will change sometime soon."

The Reds opened the scoring in the third and added three insurance runs in the ninth.

Schumaker led off with a single and after Zack Cozart struck out, Bailey moved Schumaker to second with a sacrifice bunt. Billy Hamilton then lined a double to left to bring Schumaker home.

Brandon Phillips' sacrifice fly and RBI singles by Brayan Pena and Schumaker in the ninth capped the scoring.
