Rays top Yanks in 12 innings
Jul 1, 2014 - 5:32 AM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Logan Forsythe's RBI single scored Brandon Guyer in the top of the 12th inning, lifting the Tampa Bay Rays to a 4-3 win over the New York Yankees on Monday in the opener of a three-game series. The Rays bounced back after Brian Roberts tied the game for New York with a solo homer in the ninth inning.
Kevin Kiermaier had three hits in the win, including a solo homer. Matt Joyce also homered for the Rays, who have won five of their last six and three in a row for the first time since a four-game streak from May 22-25.
Brad Boxberger (1-1) pitched the 11th and 12th for Tampa Bay to earn the win.
Roberts ended with two hits for the Yankees, who have dropped three in a row and seven of their last nine.
"We've had our share of issues like a lot of the other clubs in this division," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "We're still in the thick of it and it's going to come down to 81 more games."
Derek Jeter singled in the bottom of the 10th inning for his 3,394th career hit and got his 352nd stolen base but was stranded at second base. He made the last out of the game, too, on a routine grounder.
Yankees right-hander Shawn Kelley, pitching in his second inning, worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the 11th after hitting Desmond Jennings with one out. He struck out Ben Zobrist and Joyce on seven pitches to get out of it.
But in the 12th, Guyer drew a two-out walk against Jose Ramirez (0-2), stole second and scored when Forsythe laced an 0-1 slider into center field.
"It was such a strange game," said Rays manager Joe Maddon. "A great game and a strange game and it becomes wonderful because you win it."
Earlier, Roberts drove Joel Peralta's 3-2 pitch off the facade of the second deck above right field with one out in the ninth inning to tie the score.
The blast ruined Chris Archer's chance to tie Hall of Famer Walter Johnson as the last two pitchers to win their first five games against the Yankees.
The Rays righty gave up two runs on five hits and two walks in seven innings and was in line for the win after the Rays broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth.
Guyer and Forsythe drew two-out walks in the eighth off Dellin Betances, who was then relieved by David Robertson. Ryan Hanigan looped Robertson's second pitch into left to score Guyer from second base and give Tampa Bay the lead.
Jake McGee escaped a jam in the bottom of the eighth, stranding runners at the corners when Carlos Beltran popped up behind the plate for the last out. Jacoby Ellsbury had singled and advanced to third when Guyer started late on Brian McCann's line drive to left and let it hit off his glove as he dove.
Yankees right-hander David Phelps gave up four hits -- including the homers by Joyce and Kiermaier -- and three walks in 5 2/3 innings.
Joyce homered with two outs in the first inning, driving a fastball into the Yankees bullpen. Kiermaier led off the third inning with a solo blast to give the Rays a 2-0 lead.
Archer hit Ichiro Suzuki leading off the bottom of the third inning and Brett Gardner followed with a triple into the right-field corner. Gardner scored on Jeter's groundout to second base to tie the game at 2-2.
Adam Warren, who relieved Phelps in the sixth, pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning after giving up a two-out single to Kiermaier and issuing consecutive walks to Jennings and Zobrist.
Game Notes
Joyce hit his sixth homer of the season and Kiermaier his seventh ... The Rays are 5-3 vs. the Yankees this season ... The Rays claimed right-hander Cory Burns off waivers from the Texas Rangers and optioned him to Double-A Montgomery. They also designated righty Angel Sanchez for assignment.
